Well done 'response'.
I liked the word-play in the end sequence.

The surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that it has never tried to contact us. ~Bill Watterson
Good information. Research & practice practice is what it's all about for me.
I never tried a pad as my only insulation - I just knew it wasn't for me. I've been nice & warm w/ 3 season yeti down to 31 degrees no wind. I typically carry a 20x25 minicell footpad - have forgotten it a few times & have used my down jacket stuffed in the footbox of a 3 season burrow. has worked good for me. If wind, colder or rain I have a DIY hammock sock to add to the UQ insulation + protect from any splash if heavy rains.
Cost? if I added up all the blow up mattresses, padding, sleeping bags etc that I used to use tent camping -- over time it was probably darn close to my insulation now.
then compare the size & weight for all that stuff? forgetaboutit! I'm too old for that.
to me UQ insulation is one of the most important besides a tarp. I had a waterbed & when the heater failed the whole sleep system failed.
good stuff WM!
