Hennessy and BA Insulated Air Core

After a miserable week on the ground on the AT I'm thinking of leaving it behind and taking to the hammock way.

I think a Hennessy Explorer deluxe is the right fit, but was wondering if any one has experience using a BA insulated air core pad in one. It's the 20" by 72" size

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have an older HH Expedition (2004 vintage), BA IAC (both mummy and rectangular), and BA Horse Thief & Lost Ranger bags. This was my original setup that I used for several years until the UQ rage started, then I switched to a JRB Nest, which I still have and use on occasion. I have actually been thinking about selling the HH (w/ZQ mod) since I've been outfitting my family for some backpacking this fall/winter.

    Ba Iac

    I've used the BA IAC.

It works well, takes up a little more room in the HH, but, minimally inflated it does well. Any slight condensation winds up between the folds, so moisture does not make contact with your clothes, but, even in the upper 20's there was not enough to worry about. Placed in the SS,.... the condensation would not be a concern at all, and make the HH more 'roomy' inside. The BA takes up very little room in the pack, and at 21 oz. is about the same weight as any down UQ set up. At about $80 as opposed to a UQ cost, not bad. Although not cold at all, it however does not feel "warm" compaired to a down UQ. It does change the hammock comfort factor a little.

Thanks for your responses. I thought I was getting a handle on hammocks reading through the Hennessy site, until I came across Hammock Forums. Now I feel like my first day of school all over again.

Psyculman, when you say "placed in the SS" do you mean supershelter?

Yes, I tried it both ways, actually in the hammock, and, under the hammock between the Super Shelter and the hammock.

Interesting comment by psycleman re: "warmth"

Before I took to the trees full-time I was using a BA Air Core. Mostly in summer, and sometimes into the shoulder seasons. The insulation cured the "cold" problem that air mats of olden times had, but most certainly did not have that "warm" feeling.

I have never tried the BA in a hammock - my mental image is of trying to flop onto a pool float in deep water - so I cannot speak to that. But the "warm" feeling one gets from an UQ in a hammock is simply delicious!

PS: For wide folks like me the BA probably doesn't have sufficient shoulder wrap/width to keep me happy.

I've used a BA Lost Ranger bag and various pads for several years. I'm good to about 30 deg with my thermarest prolite (I'm a warm sleeper). My BA pad is not as warm and too thick in the hammock for my taste.

Expecting delivery of Hammock Gear UQ and TQ this week and may squeeze in one more trip to the Uintas to try at 10,000 feet.
