    hello from excelsior, mn!

hiyas. i was on youtube watching vids of the superior hiking trail that i plan hiking with my sons and, lo and behold, came upon a shug vid. after thinking this guy is crazy, i came to realize the genius behind the madness. lol hence my new, outrageous obsession with the hammock camping.

i've got a lot of questions. it'll take a while to figure out my rigging and something that feels comfortable. i bought a eno doublenest, made my own straps, using an old rainfly as a tarp. up here in mn its normally raining, humid or snow. i don't use down because i can never seem to keep it dry and up here, wet means dead. i have a mountain hardwear 3/4 pad, a thermarest 1" and one of those nice space blankets. gonna test those before i go to a synthetic uq.

today, i am making my sons's hammocks. i like the gathered end hammock but wonder of a few mods you guys might talk me out of. i was wondering what would happen if you hung it from a loop of the rope used to cinch it. also thinking of running a continuous rope through the two long channels which would have a loop that would snap into the carabiner that my cinching loops would snap into. my theory is that this would help with the sag of the sides based on where and how i make the knots. get it? like one tight side and one loose side would basically make it a hanging couch. two tight sides might actually close it up over the top. what do you guys think?

Welcome! Looks like Shug's lured in another one

You could certainly hang from the same loop of rope that's gathering the end of the hammock. Just be sure that the rope you're using is strong enough. A continuous loop of amsteel perhaps.

Other possible mods for your son's DIY hammock - add a ridge line to help set a consistent sag. Dial it in good once and then no more worries about having to fiddle with it as you move between trees with different spacings.

Not sure about the continuous loops through the long channels - lots of great & knowledgeable folks here, so I'm sure one of them will chime in. Along sorta similar lines, check out the video on Wilderness Logics gear - their Night Owl hammock has an interesting adjustable footbox/headbox thing going with shock cords in part of the long channels.

thanx, lorax! kinda what i was thinking. was thinking of shockcord for it too but was initially thinking of using the same rope used for my cinched ends. i like it. i thinki i'm on to something yet can't really identify what it is exactly yet. lol. must come with me being a noob still.

    Welcome to HF...

    welcome indeed.

And there's nothing left to do but count the years

And stones fall from my eyes instead of tears

And dream me a dream of my own

Welcome from the opposite end of the country - North Central Florida! Lived in Northern Wisconsin for a while, though - we used to have a picnic in the summertime if it fell on a Sunday and didn't rain that day.
