A weekend in the woods! (Dial-Up Beware!)

    Finally...I got to the woods!

Had an overnight adventure at our local Angeles National Forest this past weekend to enjoy some good company, conversations, and gear talk.

Four of us spent a weekend to explore around the Chantry Flats section of the ANF. Our route for day was to do...

    1. Upper Winter Creek Trail to
    2. Hoegees CG - to setup base camp then hike to
    3. Robert's Camp Trail Junction to
    4. Sturtevant Falls then back to
    5. Robert's Camp Trail Junction to take the
    6. Lower Horse Trail to
    7. Sprucegrove CG to
    8. Sturtevant Camp to
    9. Mt. Zion Summit then back to
    10. Hoegees CG for some campfire fun.

Total mileage for this day was 10.5 miles with varying elevation from 2100ft. to around 3500ft.

    start of our trail.

    off we go...

It was a beautiful day to say the least to walk on a nice trail.

    watch your step!

    almost at our first stop.

    setting up basecamp.

my accommodations for the evening thanks to Lymphocytosis for the SRL!

After setting up camp, we continue on our adventure for the day.

cabins along the trail that are still used to this day privately.

did I already mention it was a beautiful day?

    emergency call boxes.

    happy hikers.

    oooh a cave!

    let's have a look!

    'twas empty.

    onward...

at Robert's Trail Junction...now where to go?

    DONKEY!

    to the falls we go.

Sturtevant Falls...I know it ain't Yosemite

now we backtrack to Lower Horse Trail to see the top of the falls.

    a long way down!

    now we head to Sprucegrove.

    we made it!

We stopped here and had some lunch and enjoyed a nice cool breeze
After lunch we head off to Mt. Zion to catch a view from the top of the mountain.

    Mt. Zion junction.

from here we head back down to base camp for some relaxing from a hard days hike.

happy to arrive and no one messed with my setup

...ground dwellers seemed happy, though one of them already asked me to make them a hammock

some pre-dinner tuna and hot chocolate

We wake up the next day refreshed and content. Our group picture taken back at Robert's Trail Junction the next day before we parted ways.

our hike back to civilization consisted of a mile long hike on paved road

What an awesome weekend...just what I needed. I hope you guys enjoy the report as much as I did experiencing it

Thanks for the blast from the past. I used to camp there at Spruce grove as a younger scout leader. Love that place. Have you been to the "bridge to no where"? Its another of those must do hikes.
Tortoise never for a moment stopped, but went on with a slow but steady pace straight to the end of the course.
