So, after my bike & hike scout report trip, I'm amped to get a Greater Gainesville hang together. Would anyone be interested in a hang out at the Longleaf Flatwoods Reserve, just outside of Gainesville?
I'm thinking about doing a Sunday-Monday, but could meet folks on Friday or Saturday during the day for orientation and help pitching camp (I work at night those nights). If folks want to car camp, the campsite is about a mile from the parking lot and three-quarters of a mile from the closest access point (with no elevation change to speak of), so carrying gear in isn't too arduous.
It looks like the earliest weekend where the site is available is 12/2 to 5/'11. From there on, until the end of the year, it seems that it's available. Would anyone be interested in a December hang?
Average temps for the month run in the upper 60s for the highs and mid-to-low-forties for the lows, with very low precipitation. However, record highs get as high as 87 and record lows get as low as 13 in December. So, keeping an eye on the weather report is definitely indicated. Three-season gear should get you through, and getting to the parking lot is not difficult if bailing should become necessary.
So, whaddya think? Any preferences on dates?
