Question Getting Tied Up in Your 3/4 UQ

Being less experienced hammock camper I am still trying to find my way and have a few questions.

Just recently bought a 3/4 UQ from HG and am really wanting to ditch the pad but first I need to tweak a few things.

I am 5' 11" tall and lay at a pretty sharp angle in my WBBB or Traveler (seems like the flattest lay) and on my back most of the night. Typically I lay with my head towards the left like you would typically in a WBBB. Just to add some more details, I usually can reach up and touch the whipped end of the hammock above my head to give you an idea how I am centered in the hammock. Head end is typically about 4 lower than foot end.

The thing I don't like about using a 3/4 UQ is that the suspension runs just over my head kind of like it does my feet. This distracts me and makes it hard to get to sleep some nights. I have even placed my Black Rock pillow between my face and the suspension (shock cord).

What am I doing wrong or is this something I will have to get used to?

I have looked at Shug's video's about a hundred times now to see what he is doing different. The only that appears different is he appears to lay at less of an angle but wasn't sure if that's only when he is filming and not sleeping.

Any suggestions from my peeps would be greatly appreciated.

I am leaving tomorrow to do some camping in Shenandoah, Va. so I may not get back to your comments until after the weekend.

    Thanks in advance.

I do lay at less of an angle and I have the top of the UQ up near where my neck and shoulders meet. That seems to get it out of the way for me.

I also use the Phoenix UQ from Hammock Gear. I position the head end shock cord to run right across the top of my shoulders then place my pillow under my head/neck. I do this because the pillow insulates my head and I only need the UQ to start at the top of my shoulders. I do find that when the ends are cinched tightly that I do feel the shock cord running underneath my shoulders through the hammock but it does not bother me personally. Hope that helps in your search for the most comfortable hang.

I don't have that particular UQ but I do have a WBBB and use a partial UQ with it. I have not experienced any problems. Try making the head end wider by not cinching up the end channel shock cord, if it has any.

Now that you've pointed out this phenomenon, I will probably always feel the shock cord on my head from now on!

I have the exact same problem. I guess my head pushed up against it too much one night and I ended up with a mark in my forehead from the mini biner that attaches the UQ. Now I try to lay at less of an angle and I put the corner of my pillow and sleeping bag there to act as a cushion. Works great. The reason the corner is right at my forehead is because I am hanging the UQ a little asym, a la the suggestion in Shug's UQ video. The UQ is closer to my right shoulder, but on the left side it is more towards my forehead. I might try hanging it more square, but I like the footbox coverage this way.

If the problem originates from the angle that you're laying at, you could change where the sweet spot in hammock is by lengthening the ridge-line.

If you've got your UQ hang just right, why don't you just pop some press-studs in your hammock in the right positions to hold it.
