    Smile Reintroduction to Hanging

Hey guys, I've been here before. Bought a ENO Doublenest years back and loved it. I haven't been camping in some time however and the hobby sort of died before it really took off. But I'm going camping this weekend it has really rekindled my fascination with hanging. I'll be bringing my ENO Doublenest with me but I lack masquito netting, an under quilt and a rainfly. So for future excursions I was hoping to buy a more high-end hammock and break away from the starter ENO rather than buy all the accessories. I was really looking at the Warbonnet Blackbird. I'm intrigued at the design and it's well within my budget. All I would need to buy is the rainfly. Can anyone give me some tips as far as whether or not this is a good choice? Are there better choices I may not be aware of? Should I get the single or double layer Blackbird? I'm very unfamiliar with all the terms and new to hanging for the most part altogether. I know that I've struggled in the past getting a good sag in the hammock so comfort has been a little bit of an issue for me. But I really don't know what i'm doing. Or if the hammock should be tight or loose. Sorry for all the questions but if someone could please spare the time and patience to educate me i'd really appreciate it. Thanks guys,

    Travis

Welcome back to HF from Mass. Those are good choices...I really like WB's products, but there are many other options out there, do some research, try some, and find what you like best.

Travis, I'll repeat what you'll hear from others here--watch Shug's video's for a good orientation that will answer all kinds of questions. If there is a hang nearby go try some other people's setups to see what you really like. You will find lots of good kit from the folks that are here on HF. Get out there and enjoy it with whatever setup you choose. Welcome back to hanging.

    Welcome back from GA.

I upgraded from an ENO single to a WBBB, and I love it!!! You will not be sorry there. That being said, I wouldn't be too hasty to upgrade the hammock first. If you are going to hang in weather below 65-70 degrees F, you will need some sort of insulation beneath you (uq or pads). You probably won't need any netting as the temps drop in the fall and winter. of course, pads are a vey inexpensive way to insulate your back side, and a double layered hammock, like some blackbirds, make using pads easier. All this to say that you will be far more comfortable in cold weather in the ENO with a quality uq beneath you than in a Blackbird with nothing under you. I found that one out the hard way!

Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can.
    Pursuing it with eager feet
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say."

I would say keep the ENO and buy the other things you want like a fly and pad or UQ. The ENO is certainly a quality hammock, and the things you buy for it will work just as well on another hammock later if you do decide to switch.

Like str1der said, you would rather be warm and dry in a hammock than have a new one that you are soaked and cold in!

Thanks guys for all your help. My intention is to jury rig a sleeping bag as an under quilt and I was gonna pick up an 8x10 blue tarp from Walmart to use as a fly. That should work right? As I mentioned earlier, I've had trouble sleeping in my doublenest because I felt a lot of pressure on my head and feet trying to sleep diagonally. And trying to sleep parallel to the ridgeline won't cut it for me either. From what I've written, would you say my setup was too tight or had too much sag? It won't be until Monday before I can see any of the videos suggested. But I look forward to learning all I can.

    Keep calm
    and
    Hang On!

    Travis.
