Somewhere out there, there's a thread where some folks (ok, me) took a piece of plastic chain, coated it with plasti-dip, added a large button (tied, of course). Worked like a charm....

Now I can't find the thread, though...
    I think it's here: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...t=30155&page=3

It's a great idea, and I'm looking for something along those lines. I'll definitely be giving this a whirl on my next outing

To clarify: it was a group effort, I just capitalized on the idea... I sent the original poster a couple pieces of rubberized plastic chain. I have a few pieces of plastic chain somewhere, if you want a pair to try, I'd be happy to plasti-dip them and send them to you, Mr. T...

No need to go through all that trouble for little ol' me (between mule tape and great advice, you've already done plenty for me in the year that I've been a member of this forum). However it would be helpful if you had some guess-timated specs on the plastic links (size, width of opening, thickness of the plastic & whatnot). Just best guesses, of course--no need to dig around for the calipers.

I've seen several people use the grip clips as pull-outs (also home made variations of such, that don't involve sewing either).

A reason to believe Grip Clips might be the best is that Shelter Sytems (SS), the company that licenses them makes complete shelters that use them in large numbers. SS have an interest in the quality control over the product because the rest of their own systems are at risk of being damaged by bad tolerances in the clips.

SS also have an interest in making it work, as shown by support for off-label use of inexpensive balloons (or disposable exam glove palms and backs?) for gasketing when Grip Clips are used on thinner fabric than the fabric anticipated.

That said, I have no experience with the OP's mentioned product. It could be terrific.

Have you thought of just using some silicone to glue a patch onto your tarp? It's a no sew option that is pretty easy. Use a credit card type squeegee to work the silicone out from under the patch.

I don't have them in front of me but the links are about 1 to 1.5" long. They are about the size of decorative chain used to hold a chandelier. They are plastic so with enuf force you could bend them, but they are thick enuf they dont bend easily. I bought the largest plastic buttons Walmart had about 1.25". I will measure for you tonight and see how close my guesses are.
