Smile Another howdy from East Texas!

    Hi y'all!

I haven't joined the world of hangers yet, but it will be soon. The one thing that is holding me back is a question of skeeter control. Here in this part of the world, the skeeters are viscous and hungry. I have read, and it makes perfect sense, that the little varmints will bite right through a single layer of nylon if you have exposed skin above it. Considering it gets a mite hot and muggy around here in the summertime, how can you keep from getting bit without wearing enough clothes or using a pad to stop them? An attached bug net isn't going to help the exposed area underneath. I am what you would call "exothermic", meaning I put off so much heat, I can't stand sleeping on anything that doesn't breathe, even a Thermorest mattress. I've seen the Clark hammocks, but buying two of those, (1 for me and 1 for my son) is a bit pricey without knowing that they will work as advertised.

Any input here would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

First off H2K let me welcome you to HF from Bama..............I am a CJH owner and can tell you that skeeters do not bite you in those hammocks through the body. I know they are expensive and purchasing two would be a real issue for me as well. Just recently I got into the DIY gathered end hammocks and have made several over the last month or so. I can say that I was not bitten through the single layer of 1.9 oz ripstop in any of the one I have built. You may want to try building a couple of the these for you and your sone to try. You can also look at DIY bugnet options as well. A good source for all of this information and material to make the hammocks can be found at diygearsupply.com. Scott is a great guy and will be able to help if you decide to go DIY.

Sorry for the ramble, good luck in the quest for skeeter proof hammocking!!!!!!!

Permethrin..(sp?) soak hammock, net, straps and hang out side to dry; should be fatal to any skeeter that lands on your hammock- do not know if it will take effect before they get a bite in- needs testing..KM(who considers fall/winter/spring to be 3-season camping..)

    Thanks for the welcomes!

I was wondering if something like the "sock" that ENO offers would work better than an attached net.

My son and I got into bushcraft about a year ago and I have been wondering about a DIY option since that is my preferred way of solving problems. The CJH looks great but 2 of them are way more than I can spend, especially with the options needed for 4 season use.

I think I'll check out the DIY option. Thanks bigbamaguy for the link!

yes, it will put some distance between you and them; except at the 'equator' where hammock touches net...

    Welcome... hang around for awhile....

If you are down this way anytime..

I have an Expedition, and and ENO double you can test drive.
I was using the ENO bug net on my diy rigs.. but now it is the FRONKEY bug net , for the ENOs and GTs.

I am, here in SE Texas and I know the importance of skeeter control..
My favorite hammock is the Switchback Double layer. The built in skeeter net rolls up out of the way and has zippers on both sides of the hammock so you can enter either side of it. You can even have 2Q2Z mod the hammock where the bug net folds up completely out of the way, giving you a full open hammock when the darn skeeters are not around...

Another option would be the grand trunk UL' s and treat them for mossy protection or get some nets.
Right now you could get 2 grand trunk UL's from amazon for close to 25 dollars shipped. The grand trunks are very nice and are one of the best deals going right now..you can start with the GT ULs and if you decide that you don't even like hanging , then you are not out of a lot of money. Plus if you decide to get one of the high price setups later, then you have a couple of hammocKs to loan if anyone else want to tag along with you.
Either way it is a win, win situation...
