    Layering Quilts?

Just curious if anyone has taken an extra UQ and used it over a TQ for added warmth? Im asking because im tempted to get a good solid winter UQ and
use both my leighlo 30 degree quilts layered over me to get me by till I can afford the matching TQ.
I fully plan to go play in the snow.

    in theory it'd work... loft-wise i guess.
but a big key is trapping the heat.

tq slippage during the night leads to cold drafts.

i'd recommend a cheap summer sleeping bag in conjunction
with whatever tq you have. plus some extra sleep clothes.

Yeah I was thinking putting my TQ on as normal and layer the UQ over that like a blanket. Add that to my SS top cover I bet I would stay warm.
    Just looking for temporary fixes.

Its either that or i'm going to put my 30 degree UQ over my SS pad.
And get the new 0 degree TQ

That 27 degree night was pretty cold.

I have not used an UQ for a TQ but I have used a couple TQ in the past. I prefer to have a fleece or something that doesn't require loft inside of my down quilt. Two down quilts hasn't worked out too good for me because the inside bag gets flattened and doesn't insulate too well. (Hope that helps)
Partial pea pod? That sounds like it might work for your core and a jacket on the end might help the feet. The UQ suspension might help protect the TQ from being flattened. Thanks for asking the question... Now I have to spend another night in my hammock.

Gary R, In theory it should help out a good bit. I've done something similar ground camping using a 40* bag, it got down around freezing a few nights and I had an Eddie Bauer down throw in the car that I just layed over my bag and I was very comfortable. They're pretty thin but it was very effective. One recent poster said he made a light summer UQ from one but didn't say what the shell material was. I was checking them out at the warehouse store recently with some DIY mods in mind but didn't pull the trigger because the shell seemed to have at least some cotton content and of course the wife was with me.

I layer my summer and fall weight quilts to get down into winter temps. It works as long as the outer foot box is large enough to fit over the inner without slipping off. A bit more complicated than a single layer - but I've done it a few times with success.

Check this link out to an article by PeterPan (JRB) here on HF

I have used a 2/3 UQ combined with a down jacket with good results. I think that combining the bags is more effective that adding a lot of non-lofting clothing. I know you can attach them in the corners and a couple tabs added to your TQ on the sides to match the UQ would keep the UQ in place. Down can be compressed to a certain point with losing its insulation value.

I make wearable TQ's. That requires sewing an 18" long strip of grossgain on each side of the quilt so that I can tie those around my body when wearing it in "jacket" mode.

The same grossgain strips can be used to connect two quilts when stacking them to keep them from sliding off each other. They would definitely slide is not connected in some way.

The strips could be just 6" long for that purpose. I would put at least two on each side, maybe about 1/4 of the way from the head and foot ends, on each quilt. Match the location on each quilt, then simply tie the strips together in a bow knot.

For your TQ/UQ scenario, just sew them on the TQ to match where your suspension is on the UQ and tie off to the UQ suspension cords.

I might give a try and see how it works.. I like the idea of adding the attachment points.
Eventually i'm going to get a complete winter set, but I like options.
