    Talking First overnight

Well, I am back in after my first overnight. While in the Lexington, KY area for an intensive class at seminary I decided it would be a great time to finally get between two trees for real. My sister-in-law and her husband have an excellent set in their backyard, so there I was.

Gear used, that Grand Truck single recently on sale through REI, ENO SlapStraps Pro (I noticed the stretch), my nearly twenty year old Slumberjack bag and an old bit of blue foam mat. I also had thick socks, a small pillow and wore shorts, a tee shirt, a fleece and a hat.

I bobbed in and out of slumber, and changed my clothing combination and my position frequently. I believe I was about to hit some serious sleep when some massive bells and whistles went off at 3am. I don't know what it was about, but I never quite got back to that same point where I believed I would finally be completely asleep.

The temperature got into the lower 30's, but I was fine as far as that goes. Without a tarp of any sort things are damp and drying in the guest bedroom. I knew that would be the case as I headed out, but we'll get something cheap and easy to use next weekend when my wife and I head out from Atlanta to... somewhere in North Georgia for a couple nights.

It wasn't a dream scenario, but I'm still excited to get back out there tonight.

Those early hangs can be great learning situations, and it sounds like you made the most of it. The best is yet to come!

Definitely sounds like a good start. We were down in the 40s last night but I didn't last long. With the car traffic and someone blaring their stereo at 1:30am I gave up and went back inside. My Phoenix kept me cozy while I was out, though.

Shug often comments and suggests that the best way for people to learn is just to get out and do it - on a hike, at a campground or, in your case, in the backyard of loved ones. Way to get out there and just do it (Nike, don't sue me). Here's to many more hanging adventures!

    concur

I agree with the rest of the HF folks.. you just have to get out and do it.
My first night in the hammock was in the garage.. Hammock had to be tested you know...
Have hung in the backyard many times.. great way to shake out any issues you may have and a perfect way to know how things are going to go in the woods. Better to make adjustments in the backyard than get out there and find out you are not ready.
Thanks for sharing the night with us.
Think I will be in the NEW WBBB tonight either in the yard or garage... either way.. gotta hang!

    Still no cool trail name...

Thanks for all the encouragement! I am exhausted after 9 straight hours of class today. It was really fun to read your comments. I'm excited about hanging tonight, but more excited to get back to my wife tomorrow evening!
