    Night sounds

A topic by JasonJones "Dealing with sounds that keep you awake?" prompted me to ask what strange or unusual sounds have you heard from your hammock?

A few weeks ago I heard a strange owl call. Researched it on the internet and found that it was a Long Eared Owl, which I didn't know we had around here.

I live only a couple of hundred yards from the Atlantic Ocean, and on a still night can hear the Common Loon from a long way off. Kinda eerie.

This past Spring on a backpacking trip it was raining like crazy. So I had my pack under my hammock on a piece of Tyvec (all food was hung in a bear bag of course). I kept hearing a sound that made me think I had a mouse messing around. I checked it out and all it turned out to be was this big black beetle rattling around. Ha! It's amazing how much noise those things can make!

Was in the back yard, testing new gear. I was sound asleep, when I was startled by a very loud sound...... my sons dog barking at who knows what. He is a very large golden retriever and was about 5' from my head.

watchman and i were at hogback shelter and we heard a bang, like the chopping of wood. we figured it was the yuppies we scared out of the shelter earlier (another story), but it went on all night, in about 15 minute intervals. on the way to privy in morn i heard it again above me. a tree with two trucks would slam together when the wind STOPPED blowing. as i stared up at the tree watchman ran past saying, i got the privy first Columbo.

I am with you guys on the owl's.
If you are not expecting or ever heard a owl squelch, it can indeed be creepy.
The only other sounds that I was not used to was when I lived in az. there where always wild hogs that came into camp. They make a lot of noise and will tear up your gear. It took awhile for me to get used to them.

WARNING NOT FOR ANYONE IN BEAR COUNTRY
If you use bear sent, (urin) and sprinkle it around your campsite, then it will keep all the other nuisance animals away... I used it to keep hogs out of my campsites when I was in az and it does work. Use common sense and never use in any location where any bears might be in the area.....

I was out a couple of weekends ago and hear the wickedly eiree sounds of an elk bugling. The first time I ever heard that sound was in a movie. Hollywood loves to use this sound in scary movie scenes. It's a **** scary sound until you find out what it is.

I got woken up last weekend by a BIG buck that was about 20 feet from my hammock. He was staring right at me snorting and stamping his feet and continued to do so for about 5 minutes. Then he decide the hammock beast wasn't going to get him and he walked off.

Weird owl sounds. Looked it up at home. Ended up being Horned Owl sex. I knew it was two owls and the limbs were shaking, but hmm. Earlier the same night, some campers put their tent not far from me, not knowing I was there, and proceeded to have intercourse thinking no one could hear them. Something must have been in the air.

Coyotes playing in the river 300ft. from camp was by far the coolest, yet most frightening.

    Weird stuff.
