I tend to lean towards the "better to be prepared" mentality, if for no other reason than I often end up in ridiculously improbable backcountry situations. I'm thinking either a 9x10 or a 10x11. I might even try to score some Tyvek, as there are a lot of construction sites on my way to work. Maybe if I turn on the charm I can get some for free, haha!

@Brian: I've always had my eye on that tarp, maybe using it for hammocking will finally make me "pull the trigger"!

If I had the cash to burn

If I had the cash to burn, I would go with the Cuben Fiber Winter Palace that Water Monkey showed in a recent video. I think the weight was under 12ozs & the thing is huge.

The bottom line is how much can you afford and how much weight do you want to carry?

My Hennessy Hammock which I got in 2003 had a tarp that just covered the hammock. I set up in a bad storm one night on the AT and about 1 inch was not covered while I cooked dinner. I had my sleeping bag, and clothes in the hammock and it filled with water.

For me, a few ozs more to carry is worth it until the cash fairy pays me a visit.

There's also a lot of DIY including Sgt Rock's no sew Cuben Fiber tarp. Great video, and save some cash as well if you got the time.
