Dealing with sounds that keep you awake?

So I've spent a few nights now out in the piney woods, or as close as we get to that here in AZ... And one thing I've noticed is I'm not sleeping through the night, being awoke by every sound out there for the most part. Now I'm a light sleeper and need a way to maybe "tune out" a lot of the noises out there but I don't want to sleep through a Sasquatch visit if you know what I mean...

So this point was drove home last night as a buddy and I were out camping overnight for some fishing and we had a lot of Javalina visit the area during the night and I would wake up at the slightest twig break and even the grinding of their teeth as they were moving around. This led me to wake up, move, spook them and they would go bolting under the hammock and give me a good "bump in the night"

I've considered ear plugs, but thought they may block out too much noise, ipod was another option, but I don't want to strangle myself at 2am, lol... I've seen other recomendations to medicate a bit, maybe some Tylenol PM etc...

What do you do to "Tune Out" a bit so you get a good restful sleep without waking to every spider peeing in the woods around you?

Embrace it and just remember that the critters detest our snoring.
I just got used to it and just be aware but know it is going to happen.

i've been hooked on white noise since the mid 70's. a window unit ac is the blame. sooooooo,

there are numerous apps for white noise and such for the iphone. simplynoise is one. they work great if this is your bag. you don't need earphones for it. you can turn it very low if needed.

i use it on the trail at times. i too am a light sleeper. it works great.

Grew up in a house on a busy highway that had eighteen wheelers running by all night long while living in Hurricane country.

I can normally sleep through darn near anything. Although I do at times find my mind unwilling to settle down and for such I find that either listening to some light music/audio books or writing helps to clear my mind enough to get me settled in.

Wow, I need an answer to this too! I have the same problem...When growing up my Mom use to say that "if a paper plate blew across the yard it would wake me up"! At home I sleep with the sound of an air purifier in the room that drowns out everything. But out in the woods, well I'm awake at the smallest sound.

That is what the outdoors is all about. It means you just need to get out there more to get used to it.

    Enjoy, and good luck
When it seems like the night will last forever
And there's nothing left to do but count the years
When the strings of my heart start to sever
And stones fall from my eyes instead of tears
I will walk alone by the black muddy river
And dream me a dream of my own

Don't know how much of an option this is for you in AZ, but I have yet to find a hang site here in the sierras that hasn't had a small stream or brook close by; the gurgling/babbling/whatever-you-want-to-call-it provides a rather relaxing white noise effect. Volume control... the closer you get the louder it gets (if you hang right over it, you can hear a car (if it's having muffler problems) pulling into the campsite ).
You're gonna need a bigger hammock

The best trick to sleeping soundly is to hit the rack exhausted - it's easy to tune out noise after hiking big miles.

Question - do you sleep soundly at home (backyard) in your hammock? If so, pick it up a notch such as a "mild" park, one with little critters. Then increase the level of "wilderness".
