I've made a double out of 1.1. Actually 2 now, my first one was a when I weighte less, and one for my dad (working on the loosing weght part though =). It did strech a good bit, and once I got past the fear of the fabric failing, I was comfortable all night long, maybe a little more so than my cuurent setup.

how did it compare to single layer 1.9 with regard to stretch? how heavy are you?

I guess I was looking at the breathability of the mesh for super hot temps. It seems it would depend on how tight the mesh is against your backside as to how well the mosquitos can reach you. If there was a small gap between the mesh and the hammock material, maybe they wouldn't be able to reach you. It could be tricky creating that small gap underneath, but still have the netting tight to the sides (and not let them in that gap). Maybe shock cord the sides where the pad entry is?

Maybe spray the whole schmeer with Permethrin...?

I'm really not expecting to use this hammock much in the cooler temps, mostly for very hot, humid weather. The ability to put a pad underneath, while it would be a "nice to have", is not as much a necessity as having as much breathability as possible and not get eaten alive from underneath. Making the first layer out of 1.5 sounds intriguing.

That's a great idea for breathability. I think I want the bug protection the tighter mesh provides though.

WB made a couple good points about the pad wanting to buckle & the netting only providing protection if it's not in contact w/ the hammock.

i was thinking the netting should be a few inches (3 or 4?) wider than the hammock, so it could hang slightly below the hammock when not being used to hold a pad.

when using a pad for warmth, have 4 cord locks, two near each end.
shock cord through the cord locks & attached to the netting a few inches below the top sides & near the ends, would be used to draw the netting & pad tight against the bottom of the hammock.

one of the softer ccf pads like the nightlight from gossamer gear may conform better when drawn up tight to the hammock.
if the pad still wants to buckle, a couple short cuts on each side may help.

    whatcha think?

Yes, having wider netting was how I was thinking of doing it. Maybe not quite as much as a 4 inch gap, but somewhere between 1 and 3 inches would definitely be worth trying.

I like the cord lock idea. I was thinking of shock cord, but that might not be strong enough when a pad is in use. Keeping the netting snug against the sides would keep the mosquitos out of the gap. Also, like you said, cutting "darts" in the pad would alleviate most of the buckling, assuming you have a cheap uninflateable pad like CCF.

I saw one with bugnetting bottom layer on the on the random images. I was thinking you could make it a single layer with a bug net if you turned it inside out and upside down. Or maybe a bugnet that goes around the bottom all the way over the top. Like a tight fitting bug tube. However if there isn't any weight savings then I would worry about durability and the pad buckling.

Yeah, I guess a really lightweight hammock with a tight fitting bugnet and summerweight uq would be the better way to do this.

The mesh might hold more than you think. Click on the very first picture from "Tom Mogg." http://www.mosquitohammock.com/hammockcomments.html

    .
not a 4" gap, but a 4" wider netting compared to the hammock w/ both laying flat.
when sewn together & hung i would guess that would leave a gap between the two of around an inch???
