Question Climashield - does the shell need a differential cut?

OK, so I'm hoping to make a UQ & TQ out of 5oz climashield and am trying to plan it all out. My question is, should the inner and outer shell be slightly different sizes in order to avoid compressing the climashield? I haven't been able to find many detailed synthetic quilt designs here but the few I have seem to just be using the same dimensions for the shells and insulation layer and sewing the edges together. If you do it this way do you end up loosing some of the loft?

    Thanks gang!

Don't know if it needs it or not (makes a little sense to me to make it slightly diffy cut), but I make the outer shell 1.5 to 2 inches wider than the inner shell so i can snug the UQ tight against the bottom w/o worries of loosing any fluff to the CS. It seems to work fairly well on the UQ I made to replace the one I gave the BIL and is how I am making my next one. From the mfers website there is some loft to the climasheild HL and I am not willing to lose any extra warmth I may be robbed if I squarsh it. Hope this helps, or at the least I haven't made things worse.

For me, life just seems easier with dif cut quilts, regardless of insulation.

MAD777 Provided me with this bit of info that really helped with getting the proper dimensions for my outer shell on my 3/4 down UQ.

nside width (xx.x") divided by pi (3.14) plus thickness (x.x") all multiplied by pi (3.14). Finally add twice the baffle height (the two outside edges of the quilt are "external" baffles). Then of course, add you seam allowances.
You probably wouldn't need to worry about the "add twice the baffle height" due to you having to sew your edge seam to the insulation itself.

It only makes sense to add the diff cut, the insulation is provided by the space between the fibers, so compressing it makes you loose heat. Just think of the reason we have UQ in the first place versus just sleeping in a sleeping bag, minus the it is hard as heck to move in a hammock in a mummy bag lol. Sleeping bags have next to no heat retention on the underside due to us laying on it. Also why insulated mats are needed for ground dwelling.

That's just my take on it but I am still learning.

My take... Minimal differential on synthetic. Top layer of a synthetic quilt and insulation should be lightly held against the hammock bottom by the outer layer to fill gaps and minimize drafts.

On down, the top layer fabric should be held against the hammock bottom and down should be allowed to puff out to fill gaps and minimize drafts..

ya, i think it should be different measurements. i would just add the loft to the outer and just be done with it. its not rocket science. dont make it so.

Thanks for the input guys. I think since the 5oz climashield is supposed to have ~1.2" loft I'll just make the outer shell ~2.5" larger and call it good.

This is exactly how I made my underquilt . . . same insulation too.
