another tentative yes. I'm determined to meet some actual hammockers & try out my gear. A first time hang in Dec seems like kind of a half-baked plan but why not?

So taking a hint from the Mt. Roger's planning thread. Prepare accordingly as it could be cold as heck.

As this will be the first time many folks have been out for winter hammocking, I vote in the interest of having a bailout plan.

I vote for a location extremely close to the parking lot (carcamp or >.25 mile hike in). What made my first cold weather hammocking adventure last year enjoyable and less stressful was knowing that I had a car full of blankets, sleeping bags, and extra clothing close by if I needed them.

I think this will make the new hangers much more comfy and at ease (and worst case, your gear fails and you can sleep in a heated car).

I've never been to Mohican, so I can't vouch for any locations specifically.

I camped at the mohican "class B" camp sites last spring, and I believe it was at the #2 campsite. These are the first come first served hike in campsites, there were two other campsites near by(#1and#3) and the hike to ours was less then a half mile in, I think. The problem with those three were that there was a small river/stream crossing to get to them, so in december it might be out of the question.

The problem I have found with trying to plan on using these sites is that I have yet to find a map that shows where they are. They have maps when you get to the sign in board but thats all I have found and I have definitely lost mine from last year regretably.

There are a number of sites and options available with different trailheads for usually a couple of different sites. We should be able to find something that would be a short distance to warmth/security, so we should be ok, I just wish I could find something now and not have to wait till getting down there..

Here's hoping I have just overlooked the appropriate website or map, or someone didn't lose their map from earlier this season

Here's links to the Mohican state park Camping page

    http://www.mohicanstatepark.org/camping.htm

and a link to the state park map (which doesn't include class b sites) :/

I hiked Mohican this past Sunday and am glad to report that it's still there.

Here's the map that shows the "Park & Pack" sites.

If nearby parking/storage is desired, maybe Sites 8, 9 & 10 would be best?

Let me know which ones you guys prefer.

Perhaps when you arrive on the 15th, you'd find that someone has already registered one or more of these sites for you through the 18th?

I like the look of spots 8, 9, or 10.

The rest appear to be a .5 miles hike or more (that's a long way to hike in the dark if you're freezing and need to bailout IMHO).

    Thoughts?

how about we divy up the closer sites for the first timers and let the people who trust their gear and sytems have the farther sites?

I've camped at site 10. The 8, 9, 10 area is nice. Site 10 was the farthest one and it was a super easy mile along an under used fire road. It took me just under 30 minutes to walk it and I am a slow hiker. Sites 8 and 9 would take even less time. My only complaint about site 10 is that the slit trench latrine is about 10 feet from the fire pit with zero privacy. Kind of an odd design choice unless you are solo camping.

I knew someone here would have the appropriate link, thanks PS!

Sites 8 through 10 look good to me.

I'm still up in the air job wise, but it's on my calendar. Current job I work that weekend, , , , so far. New job, I'm off Fri - Sun.
