FWIW, I've ordered a "Hamarack", Mac's new name for the cotton canvas hammock sock (with SEEP). After inspecting this product at the Winter Camping Symposium, it struck me as a great cold weather temperature range extender/weathershield/wind protector. While it won't win the "ultralight" contest, it qualifies for my winter kit by being functional. It's also why my deep cold clothing is mostly wool (e.g. heavy wool hunting pants, etc.)!

Are there any DIY instructions out there on putting together a sock from ripstop nylon?
I think a sock sounds like it could be rather easy to make, and would be a good start towards a winter setup.

Try this one on Just Jeff's web site. That's where I started. (Then my boat building experience overcame good sense, and, well...)

+1 on Just Jeff's web site. Super easy, not a lot of time involved, good DIY project, and if you can find DWR then all the better. I didn't use DWR.

How good would a cottons bedsheet work compared to ripstop nylon or canvas?

If you used a bedsheet that was a high thread count and was diffuclt to breath through it would work great for the deep cold.

Beep - I just pulled out a heavy wool sweater I got yrs ago from a friend who visited Ireland. gotta think if I still have my old hunting clothes..

oldgringo thanks for that link. Don't know how I missed it or maybe I couldn't wrap my head around it at the time it was posted.

Let me see if I understand..
when temps are 20* & above I know I'm good with a 3season yet, 3 season burrow and I plan to add a papa smurf winter sock.

say between 20 & zero?? I have a zero degree phoenix (traveler hammock) would a papa smurf winter sock or Mac's nylon hammock sock w/ seep still be good? or should I think about adding piece of reflectix or minicell ccf pad between the hammock & UQ at this point?

An uninsulated nylon sock will work well in deep cold... but cotton works far better!

Try using no vapor barriers in deep cold.

Hmmm how does that logic go? I thought vb's were acceptable/fine in deep cold...
