    Oh my aching back!

Okay, I am not a hammock user ....yet. But I plan on it.

I am a CubMster of a pack in Hampstead, NC. We go camping at least 3 times a year as a pack, and 3 or 4 more times at district or council event's.

My son is at the highest rank of Cub Scouts, soon to cross into Boy Scouts, so as time will go by, we will camp more often.

Now, my issue is not that I hate using a tent, but hate dropping to my hands and kness to crawl in or out of the tent, having to lay down on the ground and get up again, and having to lay on my back to get dressed .
I carry a huge tote for all the tent, ground tarp, rainfly, bags, etc...

I want to be able to carry it all on a pack.

Did I mention my back? Thinking a nice comfortable hammock that is about waist high will keep me from being stiff and sore after two nights of camping.

So, within a month or two, I plan on buying a hammock.

While I do not want the cheapest low quality hammock out there...I also know that there is a learning curve and that buying the super ultra elite expert hammock will do me no better.

Also, I am of the midset that you don't need a decked out, chromed out hummer when a plain jeep will do just as good.

    WEll, here I am!

Welcome aboard! You might want to check out Hennessy Hammocks, they've got some great deals going and even give scouting discounts - but I would also recommend finding out when there's a group hang going on, most of us love to let prospective hangers try our setups and you can form your own opinion. Not sure where Hampsted is but there's a group hang in Burrell's Ford over Veteran's Day weekend.

    Welcome!!

LOL. That's how you typically use a tent. Hope you find the comfort your back needs!

Welcome, Scoutfish. You've come to the right place. There's a wealth of information on here. Like lots of us you can spend some time lurking and reading and learning before making purchases or decisions. +1 on getting to a hang and meeting folks and trying some different rigs out; it will be time wellp spent. You might also check out PapaSmurf's site; he has offered some package deals for Scouts that might interest you. Again, welcome to HF--it's a great place to be.

welcome to the madness from up the coast

I got into hammocks for some of the same reasons you did.

Contact TinaLoiise, she has a scout troop in your area. Might be able to get up with her on what hammocks her troop might be using.

Welcome to the Forums. There is an overload of info around here. And alot of different hammocks to choose from. I have 2 ENOs, a single and a double, but prefer my Do It Yourself Gather End. If you want something of quality, but on the cheap, as Les Rust said, check out PapaSmurfs site.

Give your son the assingnment to sew a couple of hammocks to earn a patch.

Welcome to the forum. The hammocks will be a great addition to your whole scout troop. Just getting off of the ground you will stay warmer and drier.
