Great Pics! So do you think a single layer of Apex 5 oz is enough for 30 degrees alone. I was considering doing an top quilt with 1.1 ripstop, a single layer of Apex 5 oz, and fleece (left over from another project). I sleep cold and I don't want to get out and freeze.

this is where I got my initial information before I made the decision to make my own gear.

The rule of thumb for clo values is that 2 is good to around 40 degrees, 4 to 20 degrees, and 6 to 0.

5.0 oz/sq yd Climashield APEX
Climashield APEX continuous filament insulation is a great choice when you want something highly durable, efficient, and easy to work with. It excells in applications having large panels such as a quilt because it does not require much quilting.

Sold by the continuous linear yard by 60 inches wide. For example, entering a 2 in the quantity box gets you a continuous piece 72 inches by the roll width of 60 inches.
5 oz/sq yd. loft=1.2 " nominal. clo=.82/oz. Total CLO : 5.0 oz * 0.82 clo/oz = 4.1

According to the calculations for CLO the Apex should theoretically be good into the temps you are needing but I would not make it into those temps knowing that I am a cold sleeper. That being said, I have successfully taken a 6.oz/yd Climashield HL underquilt down to 29* F and not been cold so you should be close with the Apex. It really depends on the person, the circumstances (weather, wind, etc) and whether or not you are supplementing with anything else. Not sure this helps, but I hope you are able to glean something from it.

I trying to get some opinions on climashield 5.0 apex double layered and suggested temp ratings. I sleep warm and have slept in a jarbridge down to 30 with a jrb poncho windshield. I slept fine I was close to its limit but was fine till morning.

Haven't worked with the Apex much (so make sure you add a grain of salt to this) but according to the info I have gleaned from Thru-Hiker.com, 5.0 Apex should be good to around 20*. So a double layer should be good to at least the low teens and maybe even into single digits. I have taken the 6.0 HL down to 29* and would not worry about taking the 11.7 HL into the teens based on that performance but I am not a warm sleeper. I don't even like being outside in temps that low. I hate being cold.
