    Couples hammock?

    Hi All,

    Fantastic site!

I'm new to hammocking and totally stoked. I bought a slightly used Hennessey Expedition A-Sym for uber cheap and have yet to try it out.

Then wife asked me the other day, "Well, do they make hammocks for couples?"

I have no idea! Would that even work? Could it be comfortable for the two of us?

Two in a large double hammock tend to fall together and it is tight. Clark has a Vertex for two people that is really nice. however; (there is always a however) it is expensive. It is my dream hammock for the hubby and I. Check out the Clark Hammock site.

    Yes and maybe.

There are gobs plenty hammocks that are large enough and able to support that kind of weight; particularly if you're looking at home hammocks. The Brazilian hammocks that my girlfriend and I sleep in are more than large and tough enough for us to both sleep in together. On the outdoor side, both the ENO and Trek Light doubles work fine. Ticket to the Moon sells even larger ones that might work better (same basic hammock, just bigger).

That said, there are two hammocks in our bedroom. We do occasionally sleep in the same hammock together, but it isn't the most comfortable thing in the world after a few nights. If we're on a trail for 3 nights, we'll usually spend one 'together'. At home, it's probably a couple of nights a week. Hammocks will force both occupants into the center in one big pile. Can be fun! But, for most, this is far from ideal. It's going to boil down to you two and if you find it comfortable. I'm a fan for a night or two, but we once spent 2 weeks (roughly) together in one hammock on the AT. I'd just as soon not do that again.

Ha! You won't find a bed anywhere in our house. Even guests get to sleep in a hammock, unless they prefer the couch.

Depends on the hammock and the location.
This is from our old bedroom. The anchors are in the ceiling. Luckily, our bedroom then and now, is in the basement so the floor supports above are easily accessed. Had to cut out some sheet-rock when we moved into another room in the basement, but was still very easy. The futon in the background belongs to the dog. It's gone nowadays too...the bed, not the dog.

Here is a video showing how I set hammocks in the guestroom and/or gear room:

Then, here is one of my favorite pictures. This is Genuine Draft and I about 20 miles, or so, north of Erwin on the AT.

We also have a few stands that we can setup if there are more than a couple of guests.

My GF and I share a single hammock (ENO Doublenest) when out camping (<300 lbs together). We sleep in the same position pictured as Cannibal and Genuine Draft and switch every one to two hours. There was definitely a learning curve to both getting comfortable and switching at the same time without completely waking up or loosing all the heat. It may seem like a lot but frankly when we share a bed it's about the same number of switching/disruptions each night and I still get a better sleep than any pad on the ground.

Gotta be ok with snuggling though ;-)

There is also the weight savings! We use a single hammock, TQ, and UQ. By sharing body heat we can stretch those way down into temps only dreamed about by most.

I'm currently playing around with a system to give us more shoulder room for side by side sleeping but it's not ready to share with the world yet.
