It's not a sound I would want to hear in a new machine... but it's not a new machine. It sounds like sloppy linkage somewhere. It could be out of adjustment or worn bushings. If the Singer dealer proclaimed it to be in good condition I would go with that assessment.
If it is worn parts you may wear it more as you use it. If it is simply out of adjustment you should be okay as long as the stitches are made well.
It's a workhorse, no doubt about that.
