    I'm slipping

I didn't notice this the first time I set my hammock up, but the last couple times I keep slipping down... well actually the hammock keeps slipping lower. I get in and wiggle around to get into the sleeping bag and I can feel the hammock "adjust"... I'm not sure if it's slipping or not, but tonight I did a test hang at a local state park and same thing happened. The thing is that I had the hammock between two trees fairly far apart and there wasn't much suspension line left and had it slipped from there I feel like I would have noticed, but it looked like there was still the same amount of leftover rope. My setup is this.... stock tree huggers from HH wrapped around the tree and through itself connected to a carabiner which has two repel rings on it. The stock suspension runs through the repel rings and then I knot it so it doesn't slip.... I pull and tug on it before getting in and there is no slipping, but after I get in and wiggle around I seem to end up only a few inches from the ground please help a noob out

I had the same thing happen on two different home made hammocks. I'm using 3/16 Amsteel Blue for whoppie slings. The end that is a fixed loop (spliced 8 to 10 inches) is what was slipping. I happened to notice that the spliced end that is hidden inside the main line seemed shorter than I originally made it. I went back to the instructions and found that I had missed a step, which was to "lock stitch" the fixed loop end with sewing thread. After I did that, there was absolutely no more slippage. If you are using spliced amsteel, check that out. Hope this helps.

The only things that could be slipping (from my limited experience) is the tree straps are sliding down the tree, or you don't have a couple of slippery half-hitches in the suspension rope after you run it through the rappel rings.

Are you running the rope properly through the rings (first time through both, second time through just one) so that they act like a ring buckle system on the rope? Then follow up with at least one half hitch and one slippery half hitch.

Other than that, the only point of slippage would be the tree straps not holding enough tension around the trees and sliding down slightly.

If you're sure you've got the biner/ring setup right, then I wouldn't sweat the occasional slight bit of movement in the straps unless it's a very common event.

I had trouble with the rings, most likely because I tied improper knots.

I switched to the elephant clips

IIRC the stitching is to prevent the bury from slipping when unloaded like when packing and unpacking your suspension. The constriction of the braids when the line is loaded is what keep the bury from moving. A locked brummel splice is what I like to use on fixed loops.

I have tried various suspension set ups. I find that whoopie slings, and toggles are the way to go. Its a very reliable way to hang. Not too much extra stuff to carry either.
Because you fall through the clouds if you try to lay on them, so the next best thing is a hammock.

Since posting this I've been researching whoopie slings... Seems like everyone attaches them with a toggle. Why not just use a carabiner? Think I'm going to get me some whoopie slings

yes, use whoopie sling and the elephant clip attached to the tree strap

elephant clips are lighter, but I have used carabiners as well

Since you mentioned there was actually no slipping in the length of suspension, but end up near the ground, you are probably experiencing the "stretch" of the entire system.
The longer you extend between trees, the more the stretch and higher you need to put the tree huggers to stay aloft. Good luck dialing it in for maximum hang. You will get it soon.
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
