    Time before Drying Gear out?

Obviously the answer would be as soon as you get home you should hang any gear that has gotten wet to dry before storing it.

Question is, what is your experience with the amount of time it would be ok to let pass before hanging wet gear to dry...24 hours, 48 hours?

Wondering because sometimes I travel to my folks house as a stopping place to stay a night after backpacking to break up the driving time and I obviously don't want to hang up my grimy wet gear in their house just to re-pack it and head home to finish drying it.

If it's down and hammock, there is no excuse for not getting it hung *Somewhere* ASAP.

Tarps, well, silnylon is forgiving. So whenever you get to it.

Clothes? Throw it in a trash bag and wash it well when you get a chance. If it's outdoor gear, it's made to take a beating.

With a good cleaner, most anything can be dealt with. I'm only worried about damaging sensitive gear like down.

I agree with Lonely Raven. As soon as possible tends to be what I try to follow (even if its not ASAP). That way it lessens the chance of a nasty surprise when I do finally get to it!

I've hung stuff out of the window of a motel on the return trip once. Clothes and cooking stuff doesn't matter too much if you've bagged it.
