No pics so my first set-up never really happened

Gathered up my basic rig today and headed out for a trial set-up.

First thing I learned was that 42" tree huggers won't wrap a 14" tree (ya, I know PiR2) ... so for practical purposes these straps are just too limiting, (although in hindsight, I guess I could have rigged a spacer.) This meant I had to pass up a half dozen perfect spots and settle on an 18 foot spread.

I was expecting to set the straps about 6' high, but the next thing I learned was that the further the trees are apart, the higher the straps have to go. I ended up with the huggers about 7.5 feet high to get 30degrees and keep my butt off the ground. (As it was, I was only about 10")

Next thing I learned is that the higher the straps and longer the suspension, the more the suspension interferes with/determines how you can hang an independant tarp.

Did get a satisfactory set-up (pic that doesn't exist goes here)

... I did manage to come really close to finding the sweet spot in the hung hammomck, except for my neck being ever so slightly flexed (chin to chest), no matter how I tried to adjust myself headward or footward. I'm thinking I might need to extend the SRL a tad.

Anyway, the campsites I use while canoe tripping are frequently dominated by mature white pines, so I'm in the market for some 6' huggers.

    Thoughts/suggestions appreciated.

    Cheers!

Congrats on starting your learning curve!

Since weight isn't a huge penalty in canoe-camping, my only suggestion would be to go with 8' tree straps, to have max flexibility.

Other than that, keep playing with the setup, you'll get it dialed in! In my case, I've learned that there isn't a "perfect" setup- more like a range of "really really comfortable" setups.

I'm updating my hammock hang calculator that may help. Also this post on three paces, reach, hang.

    Good luck!

Exactly the reason that I have my tarp ridgeline "follow" my suspension.

    Shown here.

The tarp suspension and the hammock suspension never intersect so there is never any interference.

Dialing things in is half the fun, enjoy!
