    Arrow Walmart "Mystery" Fabric!

I found some interesting material that I hope someone here can help me identify. Here's a pic:

It's untreated and very breathable. It's incrediably soft, softer than my silk hammock. It feels like it weighs the same as the 1.1 oz DWR but is thicker. I can see my hand when I put it behind 1.1 oz material but not with this fabric. Did I mention how soft it is? The grid pattern in the fabric is much smaller than in any other ripstop I have seen.

At first I didn't like the yellow color, but it grew on me. There was barely enough there for a hammock.

I plan on using this fabric to make one of Risk's zHammocks, the dark gray on the outside with the yellow lining. I may whip it so the yellow is the outer layer and then I will look like a big banana!

i'm not saying that's what you got there, but i have seen several bolts of fabric at wal-mart that looked like rip stop but when i looked more closely i began to wonder if it was actually rip stop.
it was hard to tell for sure, but it looked like instead of having the heaver threads criss-crossing that gave it that pattern, it looked more like a smoother, thinner thread was used in the weaving process to give it that pattern.
i probably didn't explain that very well... but it's been a long day<g>.
besides, i could be wrong... i was last week<g>.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

    headchange4u,

I recently bought some of what I think is the very same mystery fabric.

It's usually used to line jackets.
If you go to the cut edge and grab a thread of that fabric, you'll see it's rather stretchy.
I don't know if I'd use if for a hammock, but I am thinking about using it for sort of an overshelter. It's very breathable, so I figured, what the heck, what do I have to lose but a few bucks?

Oh, and I think it may actually be a type of taffeta.... but don't quote me on that

    slowhike,
I understand what you mean and I looked for than when I bought the fabric. As far I can tell it is a ripstop grid. The fraying on the edges stops at the lines and they are very slightly raised.

    Perkolady,

This fabric is not stretchy, not anymore than any other nylon ripstop. I did see some of that same fabric that you are talikng about. I noticed it had an elastic feel with a ripstop grid. I passed it up because I didn't think it would be useful as a hammock fabric.

    more mystery

Another mystery fabric I bought as well, was some kind of digital camo that seems to be some type of nylon blend that feels almost cotton-ish but it isn't.

I'm gonna use this to practice making my very first hammock, since it seems sturdy enough , and I like the camo

I found some 1.9 ripstop as well, but I'll save that for my second try at a hammock, since I know that once I make my first, there may be no stopping me then

I guess Jeff musta missed MY Walmart on his way to NC...

Headchange4U - the mystery fabric looks like textured poyester taffeta. It has no stretch to loose threads. There is also a nylon taffeta, but it isn't as shiny. It is used to line clothing. I made a test hammock with some and it held my ample arse just fine and it breathed well -- too well (I froze my ample arse off.)

I think I have some of that mystery fabric from my Great Walmart Quest. I just assumed it was riptop nylon, but it is much softer. I think it's the same stuff I made my first WarmHammock from. That hammock held up for quite a while, then failed at the place where I ripped out the backstitching when I put my heel there. If it's the same stuff, a two-layer hammock from it should work.

Perkolady - I've seen that camo stuff, but always passed it up b/c I don't like camo much. So now...I get to NC and my 7yo wants a camo room. I go to Walmart for the $1/yd camo fabric...and all they have here is cheesy!! No normal camo patterns, either desert or woodland! So I picked up some okay looking desert camo for his curtains and whatever else I can make from it. It looks okay, but it just burns me thinking about all that stuff I passed up for the past three years!

I always wondered if that camo was some kind of supplex or something.

I'm pretty sure they've got some "normal camo" - MAN I hate that digital stuff - at the Walmart here, Jeff. Cotton, of course, but it'd work fine for curtains, bedsheets, whatever...

Ok - let me see what I can do with what I have. We're going to that big Army surplus store outside the Bragg gate today...he even wants a gun rack for his toy guns! I'll hit you up if I need any more.

I don't like Walmart's digital camo, but I like the new Army and Marine digital camo uniforms. The AF is talking about new uniforms in digital camo, but they were going to be blue. Apparently so many people pitched a fit that they decided against the blue...which means another eleventy-six years of focus groups before they decide what to give us (er...what to make us buy). The blue really was pretty horrendous, though.

I bought some of that digital camo material a while back and just made a hammock out of it the other night. It's not rip stop but seems to be pretty tough and breathable. I also made a small stuff bag for my tarp I made a couple weeks ago.
