    Stitching for webbing loops

For my converted sleeping bag UQ project, I've decided to sew webbing loops to each corner to attach the suspension. Can anybody tell me what kind of stitch I should use on the webbing to make the loops.

Pics or a diagram would be really useful, as I'm still a noob at the sewing machine.

If you are going to be sewing loops in webbing, there is some additional info in the pdf linked to in this thread:

It discusses different sewing pattern methods and strength rates of each, for sewing loops in webbing. It does say nylon webbing, but considering it's the stitching that's being tested I don't think that matters too much.

and... yes regular machine worked fine here as well on 1" polyester webbing using gutermann upholstery thread.

Webbing loops for an underquilt are a completely different beastie than for main suspension use. The strength required to hold up an underquilt is minimal compared to what is needed for the full weight bearing suspension. Pick the way that fits the project space the best and let it go at that. Ain't no biggie.
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Thanks for the links WingNut. Very interesting reading.

And you're quite right Rev, but I thought seeing as I was using the sewing machine, I might as well get in some practice on sewing a decent weight bearing stitch.

Wow... awesome article and it sure brings back the memories. Some good reading. I was briefly editor of "Speleotype," the newsletter for the East Tennessee Grotto of the NSS, before being transferred from Oak Ridge, Tennessee to Memphis (and beginning law school and a family and, double-whammy, no caves).

Thanks for sharing! (I'll change my stitch pattern now.)

That article contains some great info and is frequently referenced in this forum. It is also the reason a lot of folks stopped using the box X and other perfectly suitable and appropriate stitches.

It is not necessarily an apples to apples comparison. In the test, they are using tubular nylon, which stretches much more than the polyester thread. That is the reason the stitch patterns that contain stitches in line with the force (or zig zags) perform better than those with stitches that are perpindicular to the force. It's more a matter of the appropriate stitch for the appropriate application than one being better than the other. Take a look at industrial slings, even ratchet strap tie downs. Depending on their intended purpose and material, they use different stitch patterns. The box X is used frequently for polyester slings with polyester thread.

The same applies to the reason for a zig zag stitch on a sail, kite, elastic waistbands of clothes, etc. The fabric is designed to stretch under load and a zig zag stitch allows the stitching to stretch with the materal.
