    Most state parks sell them.

I bought a very nice one made out of Sassafras wood from Petit Jean State Park in Arkansas for my birthday. It is very light weight and strong. I have used it hiking and backpacking several times and have enjoyed it immensely.

    wood walking stick

It is easy to make your own ...find a small diameter tree branch about 5 -6 feet long. Peel the bark off, trim it out smooth. give it a coat or two of linseed oil and it will last years. I have a hickory staff made over 20 years ago and it does me well. Have made dozens of them over the years.

What he said -- I still use the mesquite staff I made when I was 15. You'd never know by looking at it that it's seen 25 years of use. Took me weeks to finish shaving the bark, sanding it, and painting and varnishing it (all black originally -- I was going through that phase). Much later, I sanded all the paint off and just went over it with a dark stain -- much more character now.

    Talking Wizzard Staff

I have a walking staff made out of Yew wood that I carved faces into that made it onto the show Finding Bigfoot.

Cool video and cool staff. It did kinda remind me of Gandalf leading the fellowship through the mountains. Maybe you can post some close up pictures of the face you carved into it. Also what is he story on the rock/marble/gemstone that is on top of the staff? Inquiring minds want to know...

    Talking My staff's head.

Here is a picture of my staff's head. It is missing the crystal because I was doing a night hike about a month ago and it split, but I found the pieces and I am going to reinstall it.

    Makes a great walking staff.
+1 all i used until about a month ago.i now use two poles.strength of bamboo for the weight is amazing.any hardware store has rubber kitchen chair things that go on the end of the legs to keep you from scratching the floor,a drop of crazy glue so it wont come off and you have a very nice staff.make it a little longer than you are tall and when your hiking the natural mechanics will knock down spider webs before you do it with your face.thats what i miss the most since going to poles, but i did it for speader bars for my bridge hammock.if i couldnt find bamboo my next choice would be a hickory sapling.

About this time of year I take a few walks into the woods around my house and locate young trees of a proper size, rake back the soil from them, exposing the main root. Cut it off a bit below the root, cut the top off to the length preferred, take it home, strip the bark and place in a shaded, dry place and let cure, usually until spring or summer. Use a grinder, sandpaper, scraper, ect. to get the look or feel you want. Hickory or oak gives you a lot of strength and haft, poplar, pine, cedar, lighter but not as strong, sourwood is my favorite, light weight and strong enough to really lean into. I have a sourwood that has several hundred miles on it.

I have several, one that I made myself from an oak blank my dad got for me years ago. Nothing really fancy like the faces and whatnot. The one I like the most is the ironwood staff he had, It's really dense and supposedly darn near unbreakable.. about 6' tall and all that's on it is some line wrapped around it for grip... A couple others that were in different stages of build and a couple canes.
It's not the glide in the ride, it's the swing in the sling...
