Colorado 2011 Early Winter Hang Discussion Thread

So I haven't been posting much around these parts, what with real life getting in the way and such, but I couldn't help but notice that the snow is starting to come down in earnest in the Front Range, and that can only mean one thing... HAMMOCK CAMPING WEATHER

I think it's about time we put together a group hang - perhaps something relatively simple, to make it as easy as possible for a lot of folks to attend. I have enjoyed the hike-in hangs, but you get a much bigger crowd when it's a car camp (or short hike where people can haul firewood in on a pulk. Over asphalt )

Any interest / ideas for locations?

I don't have any specific date in mind - with both Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks coming up, I'm sure a lot of people will be pretty busy traveling to visit family. I will likely stay in CO for both holidays this year, since I just came back from being out of town for five weeks, but I realize most people would prefer to have it on a weekend OTHER than those two.

Bit of a thread hijack, but I'm going to be in Castle Rock for a week the week after Thanksgiving. If anyone could forward me some info on where I could slide in a quick overnighter not too far away (maybe an hour or two driving?). A short hike or even car camp would do, just so I can return saying "I went camping in Colorado!" I'll have my gear with me and hopefully a winter setup by then. Thanks for the help!

I'm definitely in, been looking for somebody to hold me accountable. haha.

Any Saturday night would work for me. I've got a few places I've car camped, but wouldn't mind checking out a new place.

My buddy and I are driving out from Missouri to backpack in Glacier Gorge this Saturday through Tuesday (11/12-11/15). Calling for low 20's at night, should be good weather to test out my 0F Incubator!

First time to Colorado for me. I'm super stoked.

I lean away from RMNP, just because of the extra regulations, requirement to use a bear canister, more expensive campsites, etc.

The first CO Winter Hang was held in a semi-closed campground in a national forest (Burning Bear). We had the entire place to ourselves.

It worked out quite well for people who forgot their boots or had to leave early because their dogs were wusses (ahem). I like the idea of doing something similar this time around. I'd also lean in the direction of doing a weekend without much moon. We usually plan these things on a full moon weekend, and I admit that hiking in the snow under a full moon is a truly special experience, but being out on a clear, cold, dark night, where you can see the Milky Way, is pretty awesome too. I miss the mountain stars!

Some good ideas were posted by Food in the planning thread for the first winter hang, I'll start looking there for ideas. This page had a couple of possible locations, for example: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/s...t=10522&page=7
