I believe edging with polyester ribbon (grosgrain or satin) makes a much stronger channel end.
Sometimes I fold, sometimes I don't. I've not been able to tell a difference either way.
When I do fold, I do it all in one step as I feed it into this Plain Tape Binder Attachment.
I only use it when installing bug net so I don't have to mess with that. With just a GE hammock I don't see the need unless its to add that extra spark. Then I say go for it and good luck. I just finished a blaze orange tarp with royal grosgrain. I never did find the 3/4 or 7/8 I like to use and ended up going with 5/8. It was a pain but the end product is so worth it.

I have made a tarp with rolled edges and with grosgrain and I can tell you grosgrain is the way to got. On the corners with a roll your sewing through 6 layers of material.
