ultralight guyline no-tangle system ideas?

Who can offer the most reliable no-tangle storage system for tarp guylines? I’m an ultralight guy, so I don’t want to add any weight to my gear. But I’ve spent so much time untangling guylines that I’m willing to add some weight. So far I’ve tried stuffing the tarp with the lines hanging free, and they tangle like crazy (these are guylines I bought with prussic stake attachment sliders from one of the cottage suppliers but I can’t think of the name of the supplier or type of line; I keep them larks-headed to the attachment points on my tarp). I have tried wrapping each guyline around a scrunched portion of tarp right where the guyline attaches to the tarp to form a little ball of wrapped-up guyline that I can unwind after I unpack the tarp. This works OK but they sometimes/often unwind on their own during storage and deployment. I have tried supplementing this winding system with a strip of blue painters’ tape to hold the windings together. Light weight. Unsticks easily, but can be reused only once or twice at best. I’m considering rubber bands, but 6 of them add up in weight quickly (I know, I know, stop worrying so much about weight). Have also considered something like a styrofoam thread spool or super light thread spool of some kind, finished with a strip of tape or something.

So who can offer the most simple, fool-proof, easy to store and easy to deploy and as light as possible solution?

I use Zing It and Dynaglide on my tarps.

I pack them with the lines looking like spaghetti hanging out and just shove them in my bishop bag.

When they come out, no tangles whatsoever.

I've been packing them this way for a couple of years and have never had them tangle.



If you do wish to hank them though, I would use this method.

No need for any fancy additional items to keep things tidy - and weighs nothing .

Have you thought about making a cord spool from lightweight plastic say from a gal milk jug. It looks like a long H. You can punch a hole at the top and feed the line through and pull it close to the tarp attachment point. Next wrap the cord around the H, like on a kite, then make a slit in the opposite end of the hole so you can feed the line into to hold itself. I know this is as clear as mud and I will try to get some made this evening and take pics of them.

+1 on figure 8. It's really quick to do. How about a small mesh pocket sewn on close to the connection point? It wouldn't really weigh all that much; it would be convenient and couldn't get lost; it would keep everything close at hand when it was time to deploy. Just a thought.

I like to figure 8 around my fingers to start. Then, to secure the bundle, I pull the end through and over line in this description on animatedknots.com

Pay attention to steps 9, 10 and 11. It looks a lot more complicated than it is. Do it a couple of times and it is second nature. Only takes a couple of seconds, and no more tangles.

I don't like taking the time to wrap up each line. So what I do is to start at one end of my tarp rolling it up. As I come to each guyline, I grab them and do a gathering/looping type thing with my fingers and then just keep rolling up the tarp. The guylines are gathered as I come to them and wrapped up in the tarp. When I get to the end of the tarp, all guylines are buried inside my tarp. When I go to deploy the tarp, the first thing I see when I open the bag is one of the tree tie outs. Grab tie out and tie to tree. As I unroll the tarp, while walking to the tree that I'll tie the other side's tie out to, the guylines will drop out. Never had any problem with tangling.
