    New-to-me sewing machine

The new, but cheapo, Brother machine I had wasn't cutting it. I figured operator error for the longest time but everything was still sloppy and just difficult to learn.

I picked up a used machine that belonged to my aunt that passed away recently. There was already some thread loaded so I gave it a test.

WOW!!!!! Night and day difference. Little, but HUGE things like the foot control being very smooth and variable. The machine has a feature where the first 3 stitches start slow to make sure everything is on track...perfect!! And when you select a stitch, the screen displays the recommended stitch length and width. Presser foot pressure adjustment, etc.

And I don't know if I'm describing it correctly, but the bobbin loads itself. I don't need to manually feed the needle to pull that up and mess with two threads.

Now it's on!!! My ghetto shop that I'll reorganize into another part of the basement tonight...

I don't need to call it a "thread injector" to feel like a man...I just place it in front of a bunch of free weights

That looks like a nice upgrade. Good tools make the job easier.

You'll have a full sewing room before long. I confiscated our dining room a couple of years ago.

What projects do you have on the docket?

I look forward to seeing your projects as I'm sure you will make some meticulously crafted high quality work.

Nothing major right now. I just needed to sew a long 1" tree strap and one onto a ratchet for my new hot tent. Next I plan to make some stuff sacks just for practice. Eventually a duffel bag.

Congratulations from a fellow cheap Brother user. I keep telling myself that I should upgrade. But it has produced lots of usable gear.

Should have been more than enough for me, but I wonder if I got a bad foot controller, or machine in general. It just "hums" when I press it all the way to about 50%, then after that it just takes off. Hardly any variable speed control at all.

LOL! "I just place it in front of a bunch of free weights"

Enjoy your new machine. I'm currently still hand sewing small items like peak bags and RL organizers. Eventually I'll check out my in-laws' machine.

Another "cheap" Brother user here. I got mine for Christmas a few years ago and love it. It was definitely an upgrade from a kid sized purple machine. Haven't felt the need to upgrade it, although it has many patterns and screen display, so maybe it already is an upgrade.

Love to make gear like hammocks, TQ/UQ, stuff bags, tarps, straps, etc.

Make sure you have a small "display" area to store all of your new gear additions. You'll need hooks for the longer items and shelves for the smaller items. Right next to the weights
Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you

Congrats on the new to you machine. I really want to learn how to use a sewing machine. When I get one it will probably be an old school machine from the 60's or earlier. I want one made of metal not plastic.

Nice job on the new machine! I had 'cheapo' Brother that I was using, and I really struggled with it. Granted I'm barely an amatuer sewer at best. Then my dear wife said she had a machine that was 'broken', but if I could find it in the basement I could try it.

Well I found it, and it's a great machine. It's a White, and solid metal, super heavy. Smooth as butter. The 'broken' issue was my dear wife had used the wrong bobbin holder. Once I put the right one in, bammo, of to the races.

I wish you much success with your new machine!

Looking good! I'm sure you'll get your use out of it. Plus, you gave it a new home.
