Anybody put a window in their hamock?

I have made my first gathered end hammock. However I have made bridge hammocks and am used to them. So it struck me when I layed in my newly made GE hammock that I didn't have much of a view to my side due to the wall of fabric.

I cut some netting and pinned it to the side of the hammock.

I edged the netting with grossgrain and sewed it to the side of the hammock.

I then cut away the hammock fabric inside the triangle shape of netting that had been sewn on.

I rolled the raw edges. Done!

Now I hope I have not weakened the structural integrity of the hammock body too much. It doesn't come down far enough to where I would lay my weight on it.

I LOVE the view that it opens up. Does anybody else have experience with this mod?

    Brilliant!

Since most of the weight is held by the fabric you're directly laying on, I doubt this will reduce the strength much... Just keep in mind that Nylon stretches, so your window may distort over time since the nylon and mesh will stetech differently...

Here's one by an early member (2Ply) that hasn't been active since 1007.
I have always remembered this one & thought it was pretty neat.

I've thought about trying something like this for a winter cover, but one draw back is that I think any plastic that is very durable & see-through will be a little on the heavy side. But it would be pretty nice to look out a window at the woods from your warm, wind free hammock
Of course it could be a smaller window than 2Ply made.
I too will something make and joy in it's making

    Thanks, JohnSawyer!

Thanks for finding that thread on the vinyl window, Slowhike!
I thought about the breeziness that inserting a window would cause, vinyl would not have had that issue. While I don't think that a vinyl window would have enough stretch to be used in the hammock bed, it seems perfect for an overcover window.

    Would Love to know more

If you have the time, could you post so more info & pictures on your DIY. Weight, dimensions, material and so on.

The window is a nice touch.

I see that you have a bug net and wanted to know if it's zipped all the way and more about the foot box as well.

    Thanks

    Thanks OneThing!

    Weight 15.9 ounces (without treestraps)
    Dimensions:
    Internal ridgeline is 92" long.
Bug net parrallelagram shape is 75" on the long sides 30" on short angled sides.
Footbox was added based on memory of a WBBB. It is 10" deep, 37" along the longer side, and 16" along the shorter side. I probably should not have tapered the long end so far, but I am trying to make it as comfortable as possible behind the knees by doing it the way I did.

Materials: Momentum (stuff I bought a long time ago from OWF).
Zipper is #3 coil, it runs all the way along two sides so that it can be folded over the ridgeline when desired. I am happy with the bug net, I think I lucked out by getting it right the first try.

    Top View Photo

Ok, here is the top view looking down from the foot towards the head end. You can see the footbox fabric at the left. You can also see the ridgeline, how it divides the bugnet in to two symmetrical halves.

I will try to get better photos of this hammock soon.

I love it. I've been trying to come up with a way to do something similar and keep the weight down. I guess I should just keep at it. Again, job well done.

    Thanks FireInMyBones!

You should be able to keep the weight down when doing something similar.

This hammock weighs less than a pound. Adding the window gave hardly any weight penalty. In this case the netting was just slightly lighter than the fabric that it replaces. I used grossgrain around the perimeter of the netting, so that added a little weight. Not much at all.

So far I see no need to make it a closable window, but that would probably add half an ounce if you were to do it.
