No concern from me on snow once I get there. I like it extreme. I just need to get to the trail head. Lake effect snow would be the only show stopper for me. If I couldn't see to get there. Anybody else have a weekend in mind?
I like refried beans. That's why I wanna try fried beans, because maybe they're just as good and we're just wasting time. You don't have to fry them again after all.
First, we must decide where and then we can discuss when. So far, we have Sprague Brook park in Erie County, Italy Hills State Forest in the Finger Lakes and Rock City (Not sure where exactly that is). Any other suggestions or ideas?
Not really enthused about a winter hang. I'm new at being new to hammock camping and was really thinking it would be best to start in the spring.

I'm with you Ellis. Winter is fine for the hangers that are set up for it, but not for me. Camping in the WNY area in the winter...with snow...wont be fun. It's like extreme car camping sometimes. The heavy snow and winds get everything snowy and eventually wet.
I have been camping with the Boy Scouts for years now. Winter camping with no snow is manageable, but add a couple of feet of the white stuff with some drifting and that will be a tricky bit of business indeed.
My vote would be for warmer weather also.

If you choose a winter date, I would suggest the minimum hiking distance. A drive-up spot is preferable especially if people are not used to winter hanging. Possibly Allegany State Park? A cabin could be rented for eating/gathering or for sleeping for those who choose not to hang (or as a safety net).
re: Rock City. That is a cool spot, recently there was a major storm which closed some of the trails. Not sure if this has been remedied yet.
The section that I was thinking of was here: http://www.cnyhiking.com/FLT-RockCityStateForest.htm The nice thing about this is that camping is legal here year round (with the exception of one day on private land sections).
There's more description of Rock City here: http://www.rockcitypark.com but I think it's another section of the same bluff, slightly farther north.
Rock City looks very nice. For those who are like I was, Rock City is down by Ellicottville and looks like a prime spot to hang.
