First Annual Oregon Winter Hang :Official:

The first annual Oregon Winter Hang will be located on Mt Hood at the
Frog Lake snow park area. Jan 13th-15th
Park near the PCT/Twin Lakes trail-head,
and head in. There is a restroom building located to the right of the trail-head in one corner of the parking lot.

Frog Lake parking area is Located right off HWY 26
About 60 miles past Sandy (coming from Portland)
You will need a Sno-Park Pass to park here.
They are $3 a day/$7 for three days/$20 for season
Here is a list of Oregon vendors http://www.oregon.gov/ODOT/DMV/docs/..._list.pdf?ga=t

There are signs up saying that chains or traction devices are required.
That's your call. we can easily set up some carpooling.
    The roads are plowed.

    Latitude Longitude

Snowshoes are recommended if you plan to do any day hiking/exploring.
In camp should get packed down fairly quickly and you shouldn't need them. I plan on do the Twin Lakes loop next time I am up there.
There should be a couple pairs of extra snowshoes around.
Cross country skis may work as well.

You should have winter gear good to at LEAST 20 degrees.
And something that can take you lower in case you need it.
Our scouting trip got to 22 degrees but its not unheard of to have
single digit temps. We will be close to the cars, there is no reason not to drag extra gear and clothing along.

You should wear good base layers and good winter clothing.
Jeans and cotton shirt wont cut it!
Waterproof boots are highly recommended and bring extra socks.
Wet frozen feet are not fun...

I plan to bring some nice dry firewood along with me so we can get a fire started without all the hassle.

For additional entertainment we are doing a White Elephant/Secret Santa/ or what ever you know it as gift exchange.
This is not really about getting stuff as much as its about fun.
It can be hammock related but doesn't have to be.
We should set a max you can spend. I don't care about a minimum.
Again FUN if it makes the group laugh its even better.

Anything else we need to cover?
    Any Changes?

I will offer my spare gear here, again, as it was in the other thread.

I have a set of Atlas 833 snowshoes that will carry 250 lbs that I can lend out.

I also have 2 OES tarps. One is a rectangle 10 x 12. The other is a MacCat Deluxe approx. 11.5 x 9. These will keep the snow off, should it come down overnight. Both tarps have Fling it tie outs with Dutch Flies and Hooks on the ridgeline ends.

Anyone flying out, or needing to pack a bag not in a car, can save some room in their gear by borrowing these. No problems, except the MacCat is new, never been used in the field. Wife would shoot me if something happened to her tarp before she got a chance to use it.

I'm excited. Is there a site fee? Would it be a mortal sin to jerry rig my down comforter as a UQ?

I tried it once and it kept me warm but my ol' lady found out I had her/our comforter and hung it so close to the dirt she was "upset" with me but I'm still here today but barely.............so keep an eye out. Sounds like a fun time. Not sure I'm ready for the 20's yet.

Thank you I had missed that. Now added in.
We are parking at a Sno-Park area so the cars need the passes.

Drifter- I was going to ask permission first, I know my place. so my plan was to take my brothers hammock, Its a pretty thick poly faffeta, and use it as an under carriage to hold the comforter between my hammoc and itself. I figured that would be easy and would avoid to much unwanted dirt and grime. Any thoughts?

Actually I might use my nylon rip stop as the undercarriage and use his to sleep in, it's like laying on satin sheets. As mentioned its much thicker and I'm sure it will keep heat better.

Hanging a down comforter between to hammocks will probably result in the down being compressed to the point of offering little insulation. For temps in the teens, I'd use a couple of pads before I tried an improvised UQ. It'll be a long and cold weekend if it does not work.
OTOH, if you can rig some form of suspension and get a chance to test it first, why not.

Where do I buy one of these...can I get it at my REI here in Spokane Wash, or do I need an Oregon specific one?

Looking forward to meeting you all...I hope I can make it...so far so good in the way of getting there.
I miss my 4.8Lb base weight as a ground dweller...But I sure DON'T MISS the ground.
