    How Much Coverage Needed?

Hey guys, I'm relatively new here, and have posted a little bit already and just wanted to comment that this is the nicest forum on the internet

Question about coverage tho-- I'm doing a Long Trail Thru Hike in July, and an AT thru in 2013, planning to hang the whole way.

I've hiked new england a long time, and know that wind/rain can be brutal, so my question is, how big should by tarp be, especially for a heavier storm? I'm thinking a MacCat Hex tarp (diamonds don't look like they cover that well to me). Will 125"×84" be large enough? or should I bump up to 130"×104"?

Also is it worth it to get something with doors (like the Warbonnets). The MacCat looks to be a bit lighter

    Thanks!

12'x7' is plenty big. You could get away with less.

Just make sure you pitch the tarp nice and close to the hammock, and stake it out properly. If it's a silnylon tarp, then you may want self-tensioning lines to take up the slack when it absorbs a little moisture and expands. You want it close to the hammock, but you don't want to touch it, and I'm guessing you don't want to have to get up in the night to adjust it!

you're right about that! that eases my mind a bit.

is it worth it to get SpinnUL instead of Silnylon so it doesn't stretch? Or the are tension lines enough?

You don't need a lot ... but I prefer a large tarp. Put that puppy in porch mode and enjoy myself instead of being cramped inside my hammock to stay dry when there's a wet nasty going on outside.

On this site there's various schools of thought on that subject but in my humble opinion there's no real wrong answer as long as it works for you! In a hard blow there are things you can do to position a minimalist tarp ... location of the hang ... direction ... within the boundaries of the trees available to you. But you'll get wet getting in and out of your set up ... it's just the nature of the beast. If you go larger ... not so much an issue. You just have the additional weight to deal with and with sil and cuben ... dang tarps aren't that heavy to go larger. Anyway just figure out what would suit you better ... and get out there!

Need a simple easy ... light weight solution to tensioning a sil nylong tarp ... check this out

I personally like big tarps. I'm with you I hate being wet. I used to use a BWWD 11 by 10 at 22 ounces. Then I switched over to a cuben by Z-Packs 11 by 8.3 at apx 10 ounces in all four seasons. I just like to have the coverage. It's what I feel comfortable in YMMV. You can certainly get away with a lot lot less of a tarp then what I use and many many do but it has to be what you feel comfortable in. And have you thought about getting a cuben tarp? That way you could still get plenty of coverage with minimal weight penalty.
Sometimes I like to hike and think, And sometimes I just like to hike.

Hiking is'ent about waiting for the storm to pass its about learning to hike in the rain.

yea im with the be prepared for anything croud i make and use my largest turtle tarp which is a 12x11 but i also use a 12ft hammock too so i need the extra length but the 11 or even 10 foot width allows you to pitch the edges almost to the ground that way NO matter what the weather is you and your gear stay completly dry and i feel thats the main objective expecially on long trips also with that size of a tarp it has built in doors that will completly close if you courious about what a tarp like this looks like i have one in my album on here and MANY of the great vendors make tarps like this that will do you right. hope this helps. oh and always use tarp tensioners they make your life SO much easyer and faster setup. also if you go with a larger tarp make sure you get side pullouts to keep the tarp nice and tight also give you more room inside.
