Simple, Durable, and Inexpensive...

I recently bought a Kammok and have since become somewhat obsessed with hammocks... I have been lurking the forums for a couple of weeks and have come to regret my Kammok purchase after seeing how simple it can be do just go straight DIY on this whole enterprise.

Im prepping to sew my first gathered end hammock and have purchased 100' of amsteel blue cord (7/64), but am struggling to determine the best, simplest, inexpensive, and most durable suspension system.

Any and all advice would be appreciated! Point me in the right direction.

First, don't be disappointed with the Kammok Roo. It's a big, nice, comfortable hammock. You won't find the soft, diamond-ripstop fabric at a DIY store anytime soon. That said, yes, hammocks are probably the easiest DIY project out there and I've made several for cheap!

Making 6 ft. whoopie slings for suspension is a great project with your amsteel. There are instructions on the forums and online for making locked brummels, adjustable loops, and other burys.

I have a few examples of how to whip up a DIY gathered-end hammock in my book, but you can find instructions here on the forum easily.

With the Amsteel you can make Whoopie slings, they are very light, easy to use and hold up to years of use. From there all you need is some tree straps to protect the trees from damage and be a good steward. Add a toggle to set the straps and slings up in the Marlin Spike Hitch and your set.

You can toss in a few accessories for making set up quicker at a slight weight penalty, things like climbing rated carabiners, dutch clips.....the list goes on.

Where are you going to be using your hammock? Backpacking? Canoeing? Car camping?

Since you already have the amsteel, make some whoopie slings and pick up some polyester webbing for tree straps. This is a pretty popular set up with minor differences in how they all go together.
