Next summer I want to live in hammock for 30 days

Last summer I lived in a tent in a friends yard for four months. Next summer I want to do one month in a hammock. More specifically, I want to live out of a hammock for a month yet still go to work each day. I can still shower and use a bathroom in the house but just like last summer I want no tv, electricity and air conditioner. What all would I need? I'm 44.

since your not moving camp - i'd suggest a big tarp for added 'living space' and the added protection from weather in your stationary, long-term base camp.

you already have a bug net for your eno- so that's that.

get an underquilt. since its summer in ohio, you'd likely be good with one rated to 40*- and can vent if needed. i'd go full length, since weight isn't an issue, plus no fussing with a pad, set it once and you're good.

if you have money, buy a tq-- it makes it easier to 'get setup' and comfortable. or if you diy, cannibalize an sleeping bag. or... just use the bag you used last summer.

those, imho, are the big 4. if you get adventurous, add a "footline" for leg support when wanting to lounge while wearing cruddy boots.

have fun. i used to stomp around kirtland, my family still lives there. the eastside is lovely. have fun!

Sorry for the intrusion, but what's a footline? Don't tell me it's another thing I'll be spending money on!

Better yet, don't tell my wife it's another thing I'll be spending money on!

It's simply a line attached to your suspension that runs the length of your hammock (I use mason's line, but pretty much anything could be used). You rest your feet on it when using the hammock as a lounger; it helps prevent blood circulation from being cut off in your legs by the hammock edge.

Here's a thread on a version of it that has a mini-hammock attached for when you're barefoot. You don't have to have that, but it helps if you use small diameter line and lounge barefoot.

    @ the OP:

The big things for me would be the hammock proper, a good (read: "large with at least one set of doors") tarp, a bug net, and top & bottom insulation. Since you won't be hiking with it on your back, comfort should probably be your motivating factor rather than weight.

What kind of a budget are you on? That'll help determine what kind of gear you'll be looking at.

One thing that stands out for me, though, is that if you're going to be hanging from the same two trees for a month, you'll probably want larger than average tree straps to avoid damage to the trees. Figure 1.5" or even 2", just to be on the safe side. If you'll be shifting your position in the yard every few days, though, this may be a moot point.

I'm real close to Kirtland, same county. With the tent, I moved it daily to prevent the brown grass. That's sort of the reason I want to do the hammock thing. I had the Eno hammock but I returned it because I got frustrated. Now I need to figure things out so I can be ready for next summer. I think I want to go with a bridge hammock this time.
