I finally had a chance to get some much needed trail time this weekend so I went down to Mohican SF to do some scouting for a possible group hang in a couple of weeks.
After signing up for Park & Pack site 9 I parked in the lot by the Covered Bridge and, since I wouldn't be hiking to my campsite, I left the backpack in the car for the day. The park was crowded as it always is this time of year but I'm always surprised by how few people I encounter on the foot trails. Throughout the day less than a dozen souls (9 people, 1 dog).
I began the day hiking the Lyons Falls Trail which is an out-and-back of about 3 miles looping back from Little Lyons Falls.
Big Lyons Falls:
Little Lyons Falls:
I almost walked out on that fallen tree above for a unique photo but thought better of it this time.
After making the return hike back to the Covered Bridge I hiked the Hog Hollow Trail out to the Fire Tower which is a 4.6 mile out-and-back.
A few cascades along the trail:
And a few views from the Fire Tower:
After once again returning to the Covered Bridge I hiked thru Campground B to the Hemlock Gorge Trail which is a 6 mile out-and-back (from Covered Bridge to Covered Bridge).
A few views of the Clear Fork of the Mohican River:
And here are a few views of the forest from various points along the trails:
After returning to my car at around 2:45pm I drove up to the parking lot for Park & Pack sites 8-10. While awaiting the arrival of HF member jlind79 I took a couple of photos of the farmland that is adjacent to the lot.
By the time I walked back to the parking lot and retrieved my gear from my trunk jlind79 pulled in and we hiked into site 9 which had a young couple in a tent near the fire ring so we setup our hammocks and tarps at the rear of the site. I hung my new XLC Blackbird and Superfly. After finishing I hung out with jlind79 for a little bit before I realized I had left my hat at the car so I hiked out and back. Upon returning jlind79 was socializing with the couple so I went back to the hammock and ate my PackIt Gourmet Southwest Black Bean & Corn salad, yummmmmy.
Here's a a couple of pics of my setup for the night:
A marvelous day and night in the woods it was (sunny with a high of 80F and a low of 58F). I got several trail miles underfoot in the forest, I got to meet a fellow HF member who seems like a good guy and I got to experience the comfort of my new hammock for about 12 hours.
There are more photos in my gallery with the "Mohican 3 - ..." name if anyone is interested.
