Dialing in my HG Pheonix

Hey Gang,

Spent a few hours this morning out in mid 30's* weather experimenting with different adjustments on my new UQ.

A few noobish type observations:

1. A too flat hang makes it more difficult to get the UQ snugged up against your body.

2. Most of my cool spots/fitting issues were below my waist.

3. Stormcrow puts a lot of extra shock cord on the suspension so don't be shy about taking up a fair bit of slack to get a snug fit.

4. A technique for checking fit: (while laying in hammock) grab the edges of the quilt at about mid point of the channel. Give a quick firm upward tug with both hands. If the UQ was sagging away from your body, you will feel/hear a definate slap or pop.

5. Over tightening the end closure draw strings can cause gaps and distort the shape of the quilt so it doesn't lay up against your body as intended.

6. Cool/cold weather hammocking seems a bit like cooking, if you want to eat well you have to invest some time learning how.

Truer words were never spoken, I think this applies to hammocking in general

We have an OHang scheduled for December 16-18 at Mohican. Even if you can't stay a night, come and hang for the day and see some other cold-weather setups, talk gear, and meet some of the Ohio forum folks.

Amen on the tenacity and patience there Dragon & Fireinmybones, apparently I wasn't diagnosing the problem effectively because I was distracted by hunger. Went back out after lunch and dialed it right in on the first adjustment.

I've found that using s-biners on the lines can help pull the UQ snug without tightening the end at all. This allows max quilt coverage area, and is easily adjustable by sliding the s-biner up the line.



Traingle thingies do the same trick.
