Nice Pack Nice beard! and thanks for jarring memories of the AT in Maryland.
Be nice if you could join us...might be lame though at 5-6 miles/day but plentyof time to explore and relax. I figure I'll probably never be back in RRG so I want to cherish each step. I guess it would be a long drive for you. We have a wee bit over 4 hours to get there from the Roany woods.
Forgot to emphasize that externals are not a requirement at all...just maybe fun going back in time.
Though carrying one last weekend about killed me...I'm still sore and that is almost a week ago...maybe something about how it forces me to walk? Well after RRG I'm going back to the OHM!!!!

on the positive the area is not that aweful big, we'd only be lost (pun at you lost!) for a few days.
Now what tools are you talking about? I usually carry a droid and map the route as we go for the vid later--so years from now I can reminisce.
I've got something better than a map - a digrat. He knows the area.

Hangs are the best place to meet fellow hangers and learn tricks of the trade: rig set-ups; food; cooking; packing; clothing; gear and other toys. Pack enough to stay warm and dry and fed.

And tell someone where your going and when to expect you back. It's the one time you don't do this is when you run into a glitch....

    On the 5-6 miles thing:

There is a spiderweb of trails that start about 1/2 mile from our basecamp. If you want the 5-6 mile route, I've preplanned 3 of them. If you want a 10-miler, I did one of those too. If you want to wander trails until you're tired, there'll be nobody stopping you. One suggestion was 5-6 miles per day so I planned for that, but I know that even the best laid battle plans are valid only until the first shot is fired.

In other words: there's a plan but nobody's gonna hold us to it except ourselves.

speaking of 'Any item of use that I don't need' I did recently score ~in the vain of adding some significant retro components to this hike~ a 60/40 Parka! My back is hurting just thinking of carrying it too

Digrat thanks for taking the lead; and in that regard I'll take up the rear as usual with my creepy crawlie pace.

Daniel Boone Nat.Forest here we come.

Oh, Roche, found a vintage saw-letters hard to make out, if you want to carry...Husq then it gets blurry.

And don't forget...we will be celebrating New Years Eve--teetotalers hang to the left and the party mongers hang to the right.

My plan now is to meet everyone on Friday around breakfast time. We could hit the trail between 9 and 10. Sound good? (I'm working on getting out there on Thursday night...we'll see how it goes.)

I'll be leaving Saturday late afternoon so I can spend the evening with my family, so you'll have to celebrate without me.

I think co-commander Roche had mentioned prior that the actual lollipop hike begins at 10am.
Sorry you'll leaving us to the RRG wolves Saturday but mighty glad you'll be there at the first.

Well good evening all. You know the nationwide insurance commercial that says sometimes life comes at you fast? Well it would appear that is how this week is turning out. At this point it looks just about impossible for me to be able to spend 2 days away. I'm very bummed! I have the snazzy retro pack and have been making various gear at a feverish pace for the past two weeks. Did I mention that I'm bummed? I would have LOVED to be there and have bored my wife to no end discussing various aspects of the trip. Although it will not be the same I hope.to maybe do a solo overnighter quickly on friday night but even that's still not for.sure at this point.
Have a safe trip all! Maybe next time I can tag along.
