    First winter hike today

Did my first winter hike today. Shake things out a bit, or more accurately shake the cobwebs from my mind. 32F/0C, 8-12" of snow. That was a surprise. The farther i got back up the valley the more snow there was. I thought i could get by without snowshoes, and i did but they would have been good for the deeper stuff. Forgot to bring my good mitts and was barely ok with my light pair. Forgot my ccf pad but did have my sit pad so i got by just didn't get to lay down. Forgot to put my cliff bar in my pocket so desert was cold and hard or should i say delayed till i warmed it up and ate some on the way back. . I had my new merino long john bottoms on , my woolpower 400 top (nice), my fairly new Montbell down inner Jacket for when i stopped, (nice), and the regular other stuff i usually take. All the wood out there was wet from the recent rains, snow, melt then freeze, but i usually have a bag of twigs with me for the BB so lunch was a bit delayed but hot. It was good to get out and think about winter hiking in snow again. No pics from today but this is where i was ,,

Surprisingly, there’s quite a bit to think about when going for a hike in the snow. Your hike demonstrates the importance of doing a day hike in the snow, before an over nighter. I imagine that some of the stuff you forgot would be a bit more of a problem if you planned to stay out for the night. That photo looks good enough to eat!

Yup , you understand. Even a day hike can end badly if a few unexpected things happen and your not prepared. Hundreds of people get into trouble every year because of the thought, " i'm only going out for a few hours", what can happen?. Most of the time nothing goes wrong and so people get complacent . There's no need to be preoccupied with negative possibilities, but no reason not to take a few precautions as well. I think its a good idea if you haven't done something for a while to have a sort of test run. . The big thing for me in winter is time. I have allot less time to do things because of the cold. You could pack more clothes but i'm trying to keep the weight down so timing is important like how long i can have lunch before a chill might set in. How to pace yourself when hiking so you don't sweat too much. Snowshoeing through the woods in the winter can be very beautiful,,,very quiet. It just gets dark so dang early. That pic is a few miles from my place. Nobody lives out there.

I've been surprised by heavy snowfall on the trail before also - with no practice or real preparation - and let's just say it ended a little early (by about three days... four day trip.)
