Looking at these two stands...

Which one do you guys & gals

think is better?

The second one looks like it could be a bit bigger, which you may need, but I can't imagine I'd feel comfortable hanging right above that bar. If it wasn't up to the task and you were to fall ... The first one would at least let you land on flat ground!

I have one very much like the bottom one except the bottom bar is cut and an extension piece (drilled scaffold pole) is inserted to lengthen the hang. It takes my Hennessy exped asym.

I have a couple like the bottom one that I picked up cheap at yard sales. Like Bindibadgi said, there is the concern of landing on that bottom bar if you have a hammock failure. Sometimes I'll lay some foam padding over it. One thing about that style is that you can slide an extension pole inside the upright tubing to give you something to tie a tarp to.

If the top hammock frame comes with the female option then that would be a strong selling point.

I just picked up a hammock stand and hung my WBBB in it. In order to keep the WB off the floor I have to string it up pretty tight to the point where the ridgeline is tighter than I would ever string it between two trees - is there any risk in damaging the hammock? My assumption is no since all the force is being put through the synthetic ridgeline and webbing and the force would be well within their working load range

Another option - make your own stand. Several members have made one of these. It's a great design. Portable, and cheap to buy the materials. There are several other home built options if you search the forums.

How does the ridgeline feel with you in the hammock? I have the Vario and to make it work the hammock needs to be strung very tight before I get in. After loaded, the upright poles bend in and the SRL is perfect YMMV.

I have the top one and used it at Oshkosh. I made some snap on extensions for my tarp but it was still a crawl in. Once your in the hammock and your rear is clear of the ground, you don't know that your 2 inches or 4 miles in the air. You're just comfortable.

My stand however doesn't ahve reinforcing rods at the angles like the ones picture does. I had to bend one of my legs straight in Newton, Ia on my way to Oshkosh. Also, because when you lay in the hammock it will bend the arms in, I had my buddy lean into the opposite side while I pushed in on mine and hooked my hammock, pre tensioning it. Use a strong bungy to hook your tarp ridgeline up so that it can stretch when the frame bends in.
