so new I don't even have a hammock

    Howdy from Austin Tex.

No stranger to camping just to hanging. Ex military, lightfighter, gettin' on in years so I need my comfort.

Which leads me to: what hammock do I get? Is there anywhere a comparison or guide as to what hammocks are better at what applications?

I'm a little lost in the sauce, as we used to say. Any guidance would be welcome.

    Regards,

    bloodgout

You can either search around here for quite a while or pick up a copy of "The Ultimate Hang" by Derek Hansen http://www.amazon.com/Ultimate-Hang-.../dp/1466263687

This is pretty much the distilled wisdom of today's modern hammock camper.

    Good luck and welcome...

    Zukiguy, you're too kind

There are some other folks on the forums who have some great videos out too. I'm a visual "gotta-see-it" kind of guy so visuals help me out a lot (one of the motivators for my book). The videos are great. Do a search for "shug" or "water monkey" or "professorhammock" on YouTube (or this site through Google) and you'll get hours of viewing pleasure.

best find a group hang....like the one in Florida where thousands of hangers will get together (ok i exaggerate the number of hangers) but any group hang/hike will show many ways to skin hammock cats

Welcome bloodgout! The first thing I always ask folks when choosing a hammock is if bugs are an issue where you camp? If so, then start by deciding if you want an integrated bug net or a separate (envelope) type. One of the favorites here that has the integrated bug net is the Warbonnet Blackbird. A very popular brand that does not have a integrated bug net (but has a separate one available) is the Eagles Nest Outfitter series. There are many, many more to choose from but that will give you a couple of good reference points from which to start looking. The forum here is full of great info and some very knowledgeable members. Do some research and don't hesitate to ask questions.

I'd like to mention that you can buy a simple hammock of Amazon. If you're a bigger boy, over 6 foot or 225 pounds, look for a double hammock. They have extra length and width for your comfort. You can buy a Grand Trunk Hammock there in forest green for 14 bucks. Blue is a dollar more. If your 6 foot tall and under 250 it will give you a cheap opportunity to see if a Hammock is for you.

There are many different brands and styles. Had I started off making my own I could have saved a few hundred dollars.

It all boils down to your preference.

One of the best things about this strange hobby is it
    leaves you hanging and hanging.

Welcome to the forums from SC. I did not know this place existed years ago and spent way to much money on the wrong gear. Now I know this place exists and spend too much money on the right gear.

I like to make my own gear when ever possible. It tends to be a little cheaper and is a lot of fun.
