We can use the woodworking shop at the camp so that if we set it up for either Thursday or Friday, Chef Shug and Fronkey will have a chance to carve either a pocket spoon or ladle.

That would be awesome! I would love to make something to carry with me on the trail. If I need to bring anything, just let me know dude!

If there is room I would like to make one also. Not sure if I can find my Kevlar glove though

We will have five kevlar carving gloves, six small blade carving knives, four hooked knives plus carving gouges, a wetterling camp ax, and other knives. You may want to check out what works best for you before you purchase a carving knife or glove for many carving knives are just for basswood or butternut. We can carve whenever you want to. Small knives are a little risky in very cold conditions but you can always sand or use a hatchet around a camp fire. Next time on the trail, check for crooked trees.

Ok, I am a bit confused. Wait wait, I am A LOT confused.

So the parking lot is just 1/2 mile from the camping area which is basically just a forest or is it more like a campground with designated sites?

I heard talk about a cabin and kitchen. Does everyone sleep outside at night then hang in the cabin during the day? If not, what do you guys do during the day?

Is this place far from civilization or close to a town?

Is it free to camp?

I am psyched to hear that some of you will be up there early (hammocking I presume) because Thursday and Friday should be no problem for me.

Calling all Old Dogs, Gray Hairs, Sourdoughs & those with frozen brain cells to the 2nd MN Frozen Butt Hang to be held the 20,21 & 22 Jan 2012

The hang will be at Sturgen Lake, MN at Camp Miller. There is 330 acres of prime Boreal forest. So the harvest of fire wood on site is no problem.
There are x-country ski-trails, lake for ice fishing. It also borders General CC Andrews State Forest that covers over 7,500 acres with 40 miles + trails.

The temps will be from 20F up to -35F.More then likely -15 to -30F .Camp will 1/2 mile + from parking. This will be a little thinner of the widge hang then last time with no warm tent or backup. Unless you have slept in the snow bank before and liked it this may not be the hang for you.If you do not have the gear and skills for those temps this may not be the hang for you.

But if you don't mind a little frost bite. A little suffering thats good for the soul. A whole lot of challange and great comradere around the stew pot hung over a northern fire. It may be just the outing for you.

I think most of your questions can be answerd by the first posting.

Camp will be where most bush camps are; in just the forest.
There is no designeted camp sites, no place to buy wood.
You got 320 acres to pick a spot and hang your hammock.
If you want a fire bring a saw and cut some wood.

During the day you can explore that 320 acres, ice fish on the lake, explore
7,500 acres of Andrew state Forest. Practise your camp skills, tell lies around the fire circle or if you like go to town get liquerd up and chase wild woman.
So far no one has expressed a interest in hanging out in a cabin.
Guess most don't go to the woods for that.

Being the best things in life aren't free . There will be a flat group charge for the use of the camps forest. Seeing most folks like to pay there own way in life, there be a hat to throw into for the use of that fine forest.

Some that are coming early in the week from far away plan to use the cabin to stay while they explore other things MN has to offer for folks from out of state.
