On a trial trip like this it makes sense to camp not far from the cars. I have a couple of locations in mind that offer some variety of elevation and protection. Best choice IMO would be temps in the 20s and shelter from the wind. Given the forecast, that should be pretty easy to manage.

I'll be bringing my usual Mt. Rogers rig, but will also have a new insulated hammock that I want to test out. It will be available as a back up or supplement (already insulated, but add your foot pad or UQ if needed.) If I have time I'll make a MacEntyre-style "dory-inspired" sock to go with it.

There are ample opportunities for day hikes. I have a couple of pairs of snowshoes and cross-country skis, but I doubt we'll have deep snow yet. Just setting up camp and cooking will be fun.

This is what I've been looking for...I have to work half a day on the 9th though unless I can rearrange. Does it matter if I come late?

I would love to attend, but I am covered up in work, like a little elf. I don't think I can go anywhere until after Christmas!

I'll try to figure out something that lets people come Friday or Saturday. I'll post coordinates for trailhead parking and make suggestions based on road conditions and the weather (which keeps changing, but still looks sunny for Saturday and Sunday.)

Sounds good David. I have all kinds of new winter gear I want to test. It's not likely but I wish it would snow too. I have snowshoes with dust collecting on them from last year.

This sounds great. I wish I could make it but responsibilities at home will keep me in Morgantown. Will look forward to trip reports and pictures!

I plan to bring a Hammock Sock with a layer of Insultex in it made by MacEntyre. It works wonderfully to get me a few more degrees and blocks the wind. It saved me last year from blowing snow. It was encrusted with snow but my insulation and me were bone dry.
Also plan to test my new insulated boots, North Face down parka and Mont Bell Thermarap pants. If I'm lucky (I'm dreaming now) and Adam & Jen work a miracle, I could have my new 0* TQ too!

Bump. The weather forecast has been changing since I first posted. We've gone from two days of partial sunshine to rain and ice, and now it has swung back to a sunnier forecast. Depending on elevation, the temps might be 10° lower where we camp. This Wednesday they're still calling for "rain or snow", which I hope means snow at 4000 ft. (The linked forecast is just in the general vicinity and at 2700 ft.) Looks good!

I hope to get up there tomorrow; will post co-ordinates and pictures.

I can't rearrange my schedule this week and need to work Friday. So I plan to leave at the break of dawn Saturday morning. Can you supply me with directions please. I need to map my route.
