    Splice Tool Suggestion

As I began to work toward splicing my whoopie slings, I started looking into "tools" to use for making splices and saw that others were using guitar strings and a multitude of other things. While walking through a local store and looking at their fishing gear, I noticed a spool of stainless steel leader wire. All they had was some 44lb so I bought it, doubled over about a 40" piece and twisted it together, leaving a small loop in the end that was doubled. Next I drilled a small hole through thr side of a 2" long piece of a half inch dowel, stuck the twisted ends of the wire through the hole and wrapped it around the dowel. I then wrapped the dowel and wire with electrical tape to keep the wire securely in place....so far it has worked great. I would estimate the wire's guage to be about 22 or perhaps smaller and it works great on both the 1/8th and the 7/64, amsteel blue.

PS: I am thinking that a slightly larger leader wire as a single strand might work as well if not better, but so far, so good with mine as it is.

Same stuff I use. I may have gotten the idea from Opie.

You've made a great tool because the loop is completely smooth, no ends to snag! And the dowel rod handle is pure luxury! Thanks for sharing this great idea!

Cool, like the idea of the wooden dowel handle.

    The dowel...

I find the dowel is great for getting the bury started and also find that by placing my foot on it while seated, enables me to keep slight tension which makes "milking" the bury into the rope or cord, far easier.

I got a fid, but I think the guitar string or leader wire would work better.

    I'm not sure....

....how to post pictures yet, but will try to figure it out and post one asap. The dsign is very simple as follows...

    1) Obtain a piece of solid "leader wire" apporx 40 to 42 inches long

    2) Bend the wire double and place a pencil or dowel in the end that is doubled over, using that as a handle to loosely twist the two pieces of wire togtehr into a single strand

    3) Once twisted, take a piece of dowel (I used a half inch hardwood dowel about 2 to 3 inches long) drill a hole through the side of the dowel about midway

    4) insert the two loose ends of the wire into and through the hole drilled in the dowel, then wrap thsoe ends around the doel a time or two

    5) Now wrap the dowel with wire wrapped around it, with a good tape, I used electrical and thus far it has done fine.

    6) Start splicing

I might add that after I twisted the wire, I removed the pencil I used and shaped the wire into a bit of a diamond shape with a point to make it easier to insert in the rope or cord.

Thank you for clarifying this for us slower folks. Lol Great design. Now I'm gonna steal it and use it to splice the 100 feet of Amsteel i purchased last night. DIY whoopies, here i come.
