if the 4x4 is sunk in more than 18 in I would trust it. According to the sales rep of a large fencing company "nobody uses concrete anymore".

expansion anchors can be tricky. how tight depends on the type. i'd be more inclined to give it a good yank then load the fall zone with stuff you can fall on.

It is not uncommon to put a post in the ground with concrete and leave the level of the concrete 6 to 8 inches below ground level. This makes a more natural appearance and if you should ever want to remove the post you could dig to the level of the concrete and cut the post off. This prevents you from having a massive hole to back-fill.

Old masonry (did you say 1913?) is just not trustworthy to do anything but take a load in compression. Actually, most masonry is not good for much of a sideways load.

The beam looks strong. I'd look for some metal plate with at least four screws into that big beam, and put a ring on that. You might look at that metal deck bracket section in your home improvement store.

Nice house. I love Craftsmen houses. I also agree with leaving the deck/porch alone, and sinking a post beside it for your outdoor hang.

Most of the load wont be on the post from your pictures.
Its going to be transferred to the deck runners and to the house.
If its securely attached you will be fine.

If worried you could easily make it stronger.

Go get a mason bit to dill a hole and use I/lag bolts and you should be good to go.
15' apart you will need the anchor points to be between 5.8 ft and 6' high.

The end with the bricks won't work, because I dislodged the brick, so I will have to hang it off that beam, or go right around the chimney or something. I was wondering most of all whether everyone thought the 3/8 anchor bolts was strong enough.

This is a pic of my front bedroom. I'm going to hang my XL Brazilian hammock from the ceiling.



I am planning to put a 3/8" eye bolt through the ceiling in the top right corner of the pic, just to the right of where the sloping part of the ceiling intersects the flat part. There is about a foot of flat ceiling space there (just above where it says 8'8"). The sloping roof truss continues up into the attic, and just above the ceiling there I will screw my eye bolt into the truss. It is either 2x6 or 2x8, can't remember which at the moment.

Do you guys think this is strong enough? Also: the eye bolt I bought is rated to 230 lbs. The tab on the bolt says, "Do not use for overhead lifting, support of human weight..." etc. I don't know what else to use. A pad-eye wouldn't work, I have only a couple of inches of space in the attic between the top of the ceiling and the point on the roof truss where I want to screw it, hence I need to screw the thing in from below, in the bedroom.

If anyone needs more info I will do a little sketch tomorrow and post it. What do you all think?

I put large Eye bolts into the walls (into studs) in my living room as a way to hang my hammock and test run new gear/ideas/etc in a safe environment.

I suspect I'll do the same in my bedroom before I ever buy myself a new bed (but I'll prob buy a futon for when I have company, etc)

But are they the usual hardware store type eye bolts? Rated at around 230 lbs?
