Years ago Mountain Hardware made a sleeping bag system that consisted of the normal outer bag and then what they called the Down Upgrade. The D.U. was a 40 degree bag with no hood that could be zipped inside the outer bag to greatly increase winter temperature ratings. what made this system really nice was that the D.U. came with a down expander
( 8 inch wide down filled retangle with 2 sets of male/female zippers) that increased the width of both bags so you could still fit inside the added bulk of 2 bags. this works perfectly for the hammock.
I thread the D.U. on the hammock and just allow the hammock to come out the bottom zipper end. I sewed a couple of loops in the bottom and top of the bag so I could hang it like any UQ. Then I add the expander to the bag. This lets me use either of my Mountain Hardware bags ( D.U. is 40 degrees or the Tallac SL 15 degree) and the expander means it doesn't squeeze the hammock and I can get the same diagonal lay I always get and the zipper are on the top so it is easy to get in and out.
I could easily use this system to - 30 to -40 depending on the combo of bags I used, if I had too.
The problem is that the bags are bulky and heavier than newer comparable bags today. I used this system on the Northern Hang, but then I ordered a full length incubator with 2 ounces of overstuff to make it a 10 degree U.Q. it is not as warm as the POD system, but I reduced the weight by 2 pounds!
and I could use my smaller Golite Jam pack on the Iowa hang.

    make sense?

If anyone needs pictures or video I can work that out.

    Pack weights

Just as a comparison for the fall hangs. On the MN hang- using the POD system for 3 days and 2 nights my total weight was 20 lbs- this includes 1/2 liter of carried water, food and fuel.

for the Iowa hang which was using the Hammock Gear 10 degree incubator for the same amount of time 3 days 2 nights my weight was 17 pounds.
