    new quilt and quilting

OK, I just finished my synthetic quilt. I basically sandwiched a piece of synthetic insulation between two pieces of fabric. Is it really necessary to quilt the finished product? Most of the stuff I have read state the quilting is only to keep the insulation in place, but it seems fine.

I always thought the quilting was for warmth, but I guess I was wrong. I was going to quilt it like the RayWay, but if it isn't necessary I won't bother. Thanks.

Quilting helps keep the 2 layers of shell material from ballooning up.

If it's a continuous-fiber insulation like Climashield, then you don't need to quilt it, but you should add loops. This will keep the insulation in place, preventing bunching.

Otherwise you just have a bag of insulation. (Or sometimes a balloon of insulation). You want some way to keep the insulation in place and keep the outer material from trying to smother you. Quilting loops will do both at the same time (two functions for the price of one!)

Put the loops in - it is easy after the first one or two and you'll be glad you did. Or, more accurately, you'll be sorry you didn't when you have to stuff it and the outside fabric balloons up like others have mentioned.

Then again, perhaps if you don't loop it, you could solve another issue. Hmmmm. Ballooning Quilt + Banana Boy = Ballooning Banana.... or Quilt Boy.... or Quilt Banana.... or... oh, just put loops in the dang thing.

I made a similar thing as an under quilt but only sewed around the edges and not through the centre, I find that the two sides seem to separate, (balloon) and I may have to go back and sew through it now.

No way man, you just need to put some loops of yarn about a foot or so apart. You can find the instructions for how to do so in the directions for the Kick-*** quilt.

    ballooning/compression

Well, the insulation is sewn to the exterior fabric (around the outer seems), which seems to prevent the bunching everyone is talking about. I have not noticed a ballooning issue either.

I used climashield XP with momentum90. I would think quilting would make it less water resistant as a result of poking holes in the exterior fabric.

I have already tried this quilt in the backyard, and am hoping to try it out in the wild this weekend. We shall see how it goes.
